Why do they stand besides cars?

Who says they are "nice"?
By the time the general public (me) get into these events, the posing girlies have done their flirting with the cameras and the press and are on their way to their next paycheck.
At the expos that I've been to, the salesgirls seem very well trained and do their job well - which ultimately is to compliment the car that they are showing. Much more effective than some spivvy lad with gelled hair.

One of the very last vestiges of political incorrectness in modern life, and the message really has to be enjoy it while you can. ;-)
It's not just auto expos either. Very often, it's the only thing that gets you through the big IT fairs I sometimes get stuck at for weeks on end. In my experience they are usually very nice girls.

They are professional models doing a job, I have organised various exhibition stands and often employed models to add a bit of pzazz, sex appeal, sometimes simply an attarctive girl manning a reception, most are simply very nice people.
The only issue is if they distract the sales guys too much !!!

I went in a trade day to the NEC show one year. A very different place to punter's day !
Far more flesh exposed and far easier to get to see what you wanted car-wise and far more "respect" from the sales people.....

The simple answer to the OP's question is that it is probably an American post war import, brought in to add glamour to grey porridge cars. It was designed to pull in the males who were and are, probably, still perceived to be the motoring decision makers when buying choice is in question. Simple "sex-sells" thing. Whether politically correct or not it has become rather a worn out clichéd way to sell anything (apart from certain types of telephone services) these days.
In my opinion I went to Motor Shows to look at curvaceous pretty things made out of metal or on the odd occasion fibre glass (or carbon fibre more recently)

Scantily clad pretty females are usually more of a draw than aesthetically pleasing cars. But perhaps the rule of thumb is that the prettier and less clothed the girls, the uglier the car they're promoting. I think it was TVR who once had totatly naked girls on its stand. What does that say about the looks of TVRs at the time?

I think really Ford dropped the Edsel because they were worried that Jaguar XK 140's would drive into it head-on!

There's a story/urban legend I read in a car mag years ago that a sports car maker (I think AC) had models in bikinis posing alongside ther cars on one of the Press days (the day before the public got in). One of the photographers semi seriously said something like "OK, without the top now, love" and she took him at his word... a million flashbulbs popped and a Motor Show tradition was born, lived and subsequently died out years later.

I can't ever remember complaining about the (usually drop dead gorgeous) models on show at motor show Press days around Europe...:-)
In fact I've still got a lot of the photographs I took.

I am rather proud of the mouse mat I have depicting me sitting on Randy Mamola's BMW Boxer Cup race bike with two lycra clad beauties draped all over me and the bike. I have the kind of "happy place" smile on my face that still annoys Mrs DP to this day! ;-)
This was on the Konica Minolta stand at CeBIT in Hannover in 2003 of all places!
