1995 - Welding - Maceman
Afternoon,

Anyone got any idea what thickness steel to use for welding up a couple of small rust holes at the top of my front wheel arches?

My mate's got a welder and knows how to use it, but just want to make sure I buy the right steel.

Someone suggested 0.6mm or 0.8mm ... sound right???

Thanks!

I've always cut my bits off an old body panel.

Inner or outer wings?

The inner will probably do best with 20 gauge; the outer will need 22 - or a new wing.

Hi Screwloose,

It's right in the top of the arch directly above the wheels - you can see the holes from under the bonnet. The arch liners are missing so water has sprayed up and rusted the very top part. Someone even suggested it's not MOT'able, but I'm not so sure. 22 guage is about .9mm?

Never seen an AX with liners. Don't think they were factory fitted.

Generally speaking; if the holes are within 12" of a suspension or brake mount, then that fails.

That sounds like the inner wing, so ask for 20 gauge, or even 18 if you're good with a hammer.
