1999 2.5TDi - Engine cutting out . . . help - jay114
Hi, I've a '99 2.5tdi voyager - everything's running o.k BUT .. . random cutting out of engine, no pattern to this, can be just going down the road or on motorway!!!
Have changed filters, cleaned tank, diagnositics not able to narrow it down, could be electrics or fuel pump - don't want to throw money at it randomly/ Anyone else had this problem and managed to solve it.
After cutting out I switch the ignition off and can start up straight away, no problems and can either run 5 weeks with no problems or 2 days!
Any help greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hi
When you say diagnostics not able to narrow it down does it give any codes at all? Could be ASD relay try swapping around in the fuse box the fan one is the same.

Haven't got the codes but they do reckon it is in the area of the fuel pump- although wouldn't that cause a constant problem, just went 2 weeks without any cutting out...until yesterday!
Will try the fuses and let you know thanks. Dont get it though once it cuts out it always starts straight back up without any problems and the engine sounds great.
Anyway thanks again

hi we have a Chrysler Voyager ( 2000) 2.5TDi and yes the engine kept cutting out as on yours, then it took a turn for the worse, it stop running it not the fuses or the fuel pump relay, at the momment we have had the fuel pump taken out and sent to a diesel specialist, they have stripped down and found the pump was not work, it has got corrosion inside of the pump casing stopping it working. ok now the bad news it takes three hours to get the pump out and another three hours to put back the pump into the car, the diesel speciaist has told us £600 plus to put it right( ie a new pump housing) sorry for the bad news, but i like you have no luck else where i hope this help you if you need more help and i can help you feel free to ask ,

I suspect there is a major problem with this car. You are not on your own, there are lots of people with the same problem and its downright dangerous. I can cite many examples where this failure has led to near accidents. I am currently building a case to take on Chrysler on this issue as currently they deny its existance and cannot apparently replicate the issue nor provide a solution. They need to be held to account. Would you be so kind as to email me at andrew.nicholls@gmail.com as your testimony to this issue would help yours and others cause. Thank you

update!! made a few calls to different diesel specialists ,the one who helped was a guy in guildford SURREY PUMPS+INJECTORS all the other places told me i needed a pump re-build done ,he told me if it was just the actuator that needed replacing it could be done in situe ,well long story short i took it over to him i removed the alternator and he adjusted the actuator to give a touch more fuel the car now is a lot more responsive and it has now been 1 week 1 day since the last cut out

Hi,

I am currently helping my sister out with her 2006 2.8 CRD with exactly the same problem. It has been in and out of the garage and chrysler claim there is no problem they can find. I am so glad to have found someone else with the same problem, as I hope this proves there actually might be an underlying problem with the car, not just hers specifically. I am literally taking this up as we speak with the MD of Fiat UK and the ceo of chrysler. Would you please be able to email me your name, details and a description of your problem, as this will support both our cases. andrew.nicholls@gmail.com

thanks,

As regards cutting out, they put the 'tester' on it several times over the last 12 months, and it hasn't thrown up any errors at all. HOWEVER, the auto mech drew on his experience, and correctly diagnosed a burnt out fuel heater plug and socket on top of the fuel filter. the heater gets too hot for the plastic housing and it eventually cracks allowing air to be sucked into the top of the housing. It also causes difficulty starting sometimes, we had the ‘glo-plugs changed last winter thinking it was that.
Anyway, costings, they also replaced the actual filter, (i think it's a redesigned housing but they replaced with a new filter anyway) £84, analysing £79, new plug and loom £15 with £120 labour. £220 and change ex vat, of course we don’t pay VAT.
the mech said that what also happens is that when they replace the filter, (annual service etc) the 'o' ring is not immediately apparent, so it often gets left in the housing. the 'inexperienced' mechanic comes along and puts a new 'o' ring in there so now there's 2 ‘o’ rings. of course this doesn't seat properly which also allows air into the filter and fuel system.
so if the cutting out has occurred since a service... go for the 2 'o' rings, if it's a random thing pre-service then i would plump for the fuel heater housing.
