Some colleagues have the 2.0 TDI and they apparently drink oil.
Does the 1.9?

My 1.9 does not require oil between 10k mile changes - it moves from the top bend to the middle of the hashed section on the dipstick.
These engines are supplied from new with fully synth oil in order to give long service intervals. Mine did 21k miles before its first oil change. I think that the performance of these oils makes running in a lottery - in some engines the rings will never bed. I'm pretty sure mine had a good thrashing when it was new (rep mobile) and consequently now runs with minimal oil usage.
As far as the differences between the 1.9 and the 2.0 are concerned, the situation is not clear. The engine bottom ends are the same and there is only 0.5mm difference in the bore diameter. There is some indication, however of VAG cost cutting on later engines (the use of LUK rather than Bosch tandem pumps for instance), so it would not surprise me if the 2.0 litre engines are less well built.
The PD is an expensive engine to make - but a very useful one to use.

My 2.0 TDi Jetta has got through 4 litres of oil in addition to the service in 30,000miles. That equates to a litre every 6,000 miles. My previous 1.9 TDi 115ps Alhambra used a litre every 5,000. A friends 1.9TDi 105ps Toledo got through a litre in 10,000

My 1.9 uses approx 1 litre of oil per 10,000 Miles, although I can't confirm exactly how much I put in
In comparison, my Bora 2.0 Petrol drinks far more heavily, but the oil's cheaper than the Diesel PD oil, so I'm not worried.

Oil usage on the 1.9 or 2.0 TDi appears to be totally random.
A colleague's Golf 1.9 drank oil - a few litres between services.
My 2.0TDi 140 used about 3 litres in 30,000+ miles, most of it before the first service. My current 2.0 TDi 170 has used very little oil in 7,500 miles. Checked before the Christmas trip to South Wales and it was just below the max level, certainly no need for a top up.

I've had both of these engines recently, with a 2.0 TDI presently in my A4.
My old 1.9 didn't use a significant amount of oil, once it had done 10K miles, I would estimate that I used a litre of oil between changes, which on the longlife service was usually about 19-20K miles.
My 2.0 TDI used a litre from new in the first 8K miles, but has now settled down to fairly minimal oil useage.
So in my experience, niether engine in any way 'drinks' oil.
I understand that there has been a heavy oil useage issue with some of the early VaG 2.0 FSi petrol engines.

Oil usage is affected by so many variables that most manufacturers allow pretty high consumption rates (something of the order of 1 litre per 1000 miles) before they will acknowledge it as a fault.
|
A friend's A3 2.0 TDI used 6 litres of oil before the first service at 17000 miles. My 1.9 TDI used 1 litre when new, but now uses none between oil changes.
My son's MB M class diesel drinks Mobil 1 about as fast as I drink beer, I'm always trotting off to Costco to get some more, that's Mobil 1 not beer.
An old combine, with a Perkins engine, used to use 4 pints every day, I sold it!

Probably a good move - they're a pig to park at Tescos.....
|
Partners 1.9 130 Sharan used about half a ltr before first service at 20K and is now approaching second service at 38K with no top up.
|
My 1.9 PD uses around a litre between 10k services. Used a bit more than that in its younger days. Now 108k miles.
|
My 1.9TDi is very nearly at 50000 miles after 3 years and a bit. It's had 3 oil changes from new and for in-between I've now used up the 1 litre plastic bottle the car came with.
I followed HJ's running-in advice to the letter. That's when I found out you can't over rev with the multitronic box - it just changes up anyway.

Yes, but you don't have to worry about trollies bashing it.
|
Our Altea uses about 1/2 litre between 10K changes yet our old 1.9TDi Sharan neve used oil in 110K !!

Gunther needed a top up at about 3000 miles, but apart from that I've never had to put any in. I assume they did at his service at 19,000 though.

Previous 2002 Toledo 1.9 TDI 110 with 70,000 never used a drop.
