1997 1.6 16v - Clutch Replacement - scottg17
Hi there... i have a p reg escort i have had for around 3 months now. it is a really clean car but the only thing i have with it just now is the cluch... it is very light... dosnt seems to be slipping though.... should the cluch be quite a high biter? somone told me fords are like that ...?

The car only has 61k on the clock but it was owned by somone elderly so there may have been some (fun moments) with the clutch before i got the car...

If this does not seem normal.... how much rougly would a cluch renewal be? is it a fairly easy job or does the subframe need dropping like in the mondeos?

Thanks and all replys are really apprieciated (c:

Put it in 2nd gear does it pull away? if so yes mate your clutch is worn, there not too expensive.

bigtee, please could you explain the logic of your test to me - I don't follow - it's not how I would consider testing a clutch for slipping.

A more usual test for a slipping clutch is to drive along in a highish gear, and apply full throttle - if the revs shoot up, but the car doesn't go any faster, then you have a slipping clutch.

Can you stall the car with the h/brake on in first gear-it'll tell you if your clutch or your h/brake are any good?

yeah.. i can stall it no probs just a very high bite... is that a common escort thing?

Different mark but mine's as high as a kite even with new clutch. Don't worry about it if it passes the stall test.

To elaborate on NC's suggestion for the detection of a worn clutch, my method is to run the car in the highest gear at the engine speed at which max torque is developed. Apply max pedal (throttle if it's petrol engined) and then dip the clutch gently until it just starts to slip. This is provoking clutch slip under the worst possible conditions.

Release the clutch pedal and the drive should take up immediately. A worn clutch will either slip permanently when "dipped" at max torque or be slow to resume full drive.

Not sure about your Escort, but the earlier one's had an awful self adjusting ratchet mechanism.
If I recall correctly, to reset the pedal height, lift the pedal as far as it will go (or prop it up) then at the gearbox end pull the cable as far as you can, release and unprop the pedal.

His does too. This problem will cause only free play, and I believe is a non-issue on 90s' vehicles.
