Cooking oil in common rail diesels, state your view for posterity.

The reason,
Certainly I have stopped responding to all the new threads that pop up on this topic, perhaps many others also? but that could give a distorted view of the forums opinions, when only one or two members (with topic endurance;) continue to address a warning response to the issue.

In other words the need for a show of hands for AND against to get a true picture.

Myself?

Against, Very much so..............

Regards

Myself, against. Not in my TDCi.

I'm no mechanic or scientist, but it just doesn't seem right given the complexity of these fuel systems.

Cheers,
Matt

In our PD Altea only in the summer and only a 30% mix. Loads of the french do it at the correct ratio's ....sadly being british we get greedy and go 50% plus !!

Going by what I've read on here and other sites dedicated to the use of cooking oil, I wouldn't dream about using it on the newer CR systems unless it was adapted to do so. However, I drive a 1998 Escort TD and I would definately have a go in that. I have read that you can run a 50/50 blend in the warmer seasons, and 30/70 blend in the winter, so I think in the future I will be having a play with cooking oil, and maybe even look into fabricating my own tank and heater setup so it can be used all the time.

I think we can all unanimously agree that cooking oil in a common rail is a silly idea. I have never seen anyone encourage it and I never have.

Cooking oil in old cars that are more suitable is a different thing altogether.

Against. The repair costs on common rail engines are far too high to risk it, especially given that car manufacturers will void your warranty if they find you've used more than a 5% biofuel blend in your car.

No chance. Wouldn't even entertain the idea.

I wouldn't even put it in the Mondeo, but only because I know that the Lucas CAV pump it has can't deal with it. And this is barn door engineering next to a common rail.

Cheers

When people get the mistaken impression (probably off the telly) that you can regularly tip a few litres of veg oil into a CR Renault, as with my sister for example, the folly of the whole thing is exposed. I think I managed to put her off, but who knows. Odd how she doesn't get at all interested in the engine oil level....

tried it on an old xud pug non turbo and a 1996 2.2 deisel laguna mk1 and both ran great but would never try it in a new 15k car

Not in a common rail. Did it with my 'old tech' VAG 1.9 TDI.

Might have tried it in the BX but not in the HDi Xantia - even if it is seven yrs old and on a final warning.

There exist two camps in this debate.

Wise men think alike.

Fools seldom differ.

You either get it or you don't so that corssmovement between the camps is rare.

I certainly won't be using my TDCi as a testbed.
