Powder coating vs galvanising - nick
I'm thinking about getting an old series Landrover, pre 1973. If I do, I'll be getting one in good-ish condition that has had a recent replacement chassis. I'd like a galvanised one but I have seen a few advertised with powder coated chassis. How is powder coating carried out and does it get into all the nooks and crannies like galvanising does? I thought it was some sort of spraying process, if so, I doubt it'll be as good. Does anyone know?

Get one that's galvanised. Everything I've ever had that's been powder coated has ended up rusting underneath and then the coat lifts and comes off.

Yup Galvanised every time my S3 had a galvanised chassis 7 years ago it was just starting to rust in some very small areas but was sound in all the usual LR rot areas. As has been said powder coating is not that brilliant

Yes; galv every time - and still thoroughly Waxoyl inside the rails and the outriggers.

If you haven't driven a Series before; get some experience before you spend your money. Find your local club - there's something about Land-Rover owners, they're all nice guys and they'll be glad to give you all the advice you can handle.

Good luck.

It's not who you are - it's what you drive. [Or something like that?]

[Who dared call you a shyster.....?]

Lud in the Skoda thread - but as the Room's laureate he's exempted on this occasion.

I used to work in an engineering place that did powder coating. What happens is that dry paint powder is sprayed all over the part being held there by static electricity. The part is on a moving track which goes through a hot oven. When it gets to the other side the paint has melted (hopefully uniformly) forming an all over coating. The problem is there will always be some part that's touching the trackway or overhead wire that leaves a weakness in the finish.

And presumably won't reach every nook and cranny on the inside? I'm convinced. Galvanised for sure.
