It is with sadness that I would like to pass on the news that Paul Smith that started the safespeed campaign has died. I did meet him a couple of times and he was always tireless in pursuing those he felt to be misleading the public about current road safety policy. Threads of condolence are on pistonheads and the safespeed forum itself. His partner Claire along with other members of safespeed are going to continue his work.

I know not everyone on here shared his views but you have to admire someone that stood up for what they truly believed in.
My thoughts are with his partner and his family & friends at this difficult time.

Wow, that's a shock - and terrible news.
Let's hope his beliefs are carried on by the websites members in a way he would approve of.

Now that really is a shock. Very sorry to hear that.

Oh my goodness. :-( I am deeply upset by this piece of bad news. I had a couple of very interesting email conversations a while back and I have always regarded him as the champion of a "good driver making progress". His passing is a huge loss for careful (and fast) drivers in Britain.
Sad news indeed.

Sympathies to the breaved family etc.
I disagreed with his "Safespeed" campaign but nobody should die that young.

Anyone who likes cars must regret the passing of one who tried to be rigorously rational in an area that is generally clouded by wimpish vertigo and superstition, knowingly fed and exploited by the 'authorities'.
RIP. His widow intends to keep up the good work.
