Sevenoaks to Uttoexeter - hillman1 {p}
Morning all,

Travelling the above journey tomorrow and have to be there by about midday. AA routefinder suggests M25, M1, A50 which looks ok, but does anybody have any suggestions about journey time, any particularly bad parts that I should try to avoid etc.

Many thanks

The lower reaches of the M1 will be a mess, a real mess as will the M25. I cant suggest an alternative tho.
I live on the West of the M25 and would go M40 / M42/ m6 toll / M6 then turn right about stafford way.

What are the M1 Roadworks at Luton like at the moment?

Might be worth considering M11/A14 or M40/M42/A38 depending on which way you come around London.

"What are the M1 Roadworks at Luton like at the moment?"

A friend spent nearly two hours doing 11 miles just last week!

I'd avoid it and use the M40.

Hmmmm, thanks.

I was going to go anticlockwise round the M25, so it may be worth considering the M11/A14 option.

I think I will just leave plenty of time and inform SWMBO that I may get back in time for Christmas!

Cheers All.

A14 / M1 /M6 Junction (catforth) can be reasonable ( it was the last time I used it) or 4 miles jam (the time before)

M11/A14 was a car park on Monday morning. It it worth having an alternative route so you can change if the traffic reports sound bad. Perhaps try the A1(M) as an alternative?

Don't forget to wear a nappy, you could probably save a few minutes by doing a "Hammond" ! ;-)

Good luck - That must be getting close to the worst journey in Britain. ( and so scenic ! )

Shoespy, how did you know I was goin in a Scenic??? ;-)

Really looking forward to the journey now....

I live about J11 M25. Most mornings I can do J11 M25 to Warwick M40 J15 in about 1.5 hours if I hit the M25 at 7ish.

If you can can hit J10 M25 clockwise at about 06:50 your route is M25 /m40/m6

( I wont tell you exactly where I live in case its a car park!)

This might help in the morning prior to departure.
www.traffic-england.co.uk/TCC/
select South East and click on the "roadside message signs"
You can then click on a sign. Zoom in if required.
As it says on the box, the route will have a coloured edge if there are problems.
It is now, unfortunately cluttered with " Take a break etc messages"

Also if the M25 has a problem J15 north you can take an alternative.
From M25 J15 you can take the M4 to J8/9 and then the A404(M) to M40 J4.

Couple of points - if you go M25/M1 avoid the junction of those 2 by turning off M25 at Colney (J22??) and then onto M10 and if you use M11/A14 avoid the dreadful (always stationary) Cambridge to Huntingdon section by turning off for A428 Bedford (J13) then Papworth to Huntingdon.
Don't know M40 route

I went up the M1 from the M25 to Luton in the 2nd week of November and took an hour for that journey - midday on a Friday. Never stationary for long, just VERY slow! Avoid if possible I'd suggest.

Thanks all.

Will be going M25/M40/M42/M6 Toll. Thought it looked a lot further than the other way, but it appears to be virtually the same mileage.

Off to bed,

Cheers

Hi there,

Good advice- did the above journey leaving at 06.30 and doing the journey in approx 4 hours driving time- hardly any problems with the traffic. Journey home, not so good, but the M1 was apparantly pretty awful too.

Thanks again,

Nick

Cheers Nick,

It's really good to get feedback on these advice needed threads!!!

(Did not contribute to this one as my routes to Staffs (A50 or M6 toll) were already covered)

Glad it went all right - I'd have gone that way too.

Uttoxeter is a wonderful name isn't it - it sounds like an insult 'Uttoxeter - U absolute Toxeter.....' :)
