Boring - so what's new?! - Citroënian {P}
Just reading Clarkson today and he makes a point that a few magazines and motor programmes have made about the new Impreza III. Namely that it's is a bit dull compared to the WRC winning stuff and the STi, WRX, RB5s.

I just don't get this. Did I miss something or was that version of the Impreza more or less the same idea as a Datsun Bluebird? Hardly a thing of beauty and if they clag enough scoops, gold wheels, spoilers and skirts on the new one I'm sure the red line water intercooler injection brigade will be happy.

It's not like they've taken an Elise and replaced it with a Berlingo.

Or is it just me?

Erm.., I don't think you've ever driven an Impreza, have you?

This is the Subaru brand - old fashioned quality and performance - we don't want interesting/modern/stylish.

If you're bothered by "boring", buy a Focus, but don't complain when it breaks.

The problem is that the Impreza has iconic status among a whole generation of fashion conscious performance car enthusiasts for those very reasons.

It's a rally winner, a fashion accessory and bristles with modern technology. Personally speaking, I hate the thing, but credit where it's due, it has made the company a small fortune and played a key role in its ongoing survival.

Would Subaru be able to maintain its global presence without it? I suspect not.

Cheers

Yep, I've driven a bazzed-up Impreza (RB recently and a McRae way back) and appreciate the arcade style whizzyness but my point wasn't about performance; it was solely looks.

If they build something that goes like stink again, who cares? It wasn't exactly good looking the first time round.

On looks alone?

Subaru have never, and are incapable of, designing a car that has anything remotley approaching a car that has "good looks" Unfourtunately, they dont even have the art of making cars so ugly that they become interesting. Nor do they have any idea of interior looks, feel or touch.

You have to admit tho that dynamically they are the bee knees.

What about the Legacy? Looks good and a lovely interior, at least in the Spec B.

Saw one this morning, rear three quarters vies looks very like the one series BMW. Does that say something about Subaru or BMW styling.

IMO you can add the Hyundai i30 to that list. And that might become a problem for Subaru, the new Impreza looks like a slightly butch Korean hatch whereas at least the previous generations stood out - not at all to my taste but I can understand the appeal. They've softened up the ride and handling which isn't what most Impreza drivers want. The new STi has just been soundly beaten by a Civic Type R (thousands of pounds less cash) in CAR magazine road test. The standard WRX doesn't seem to do too well against its peers either.

So if they've lost the dynamic edge, look ordinary or pretty awful then it's just the engineering quality and prospects of trouble free long term ownership to differentiate the cars - good but surely not enough. I can imagine a facelift being brought forward and plans to get the diesel into the Impreza accelerated.

I've not driven an Impreza. No doubt they are capable cars and they do a passable impersonation of a misfiring boy-racer Corsa in the sound department, but they are not pretty. The new one looks bland, but bland is better than ugly!

A couple of weeks ago I went to Upper Heyford to drive 4 rapid cars (a birthday present/) - Ferrari 360 (400bhp) Porsche Carrera (330 bhp), Impreza Sti (300bhp) and Elise 120bhp.

Four groups of 4 people - the Impreza easily got the most votes and broadest smiles then the Elise and then the Porsche. Five minutes in a 360 for me and most of the others wasn't long enough to master the gear change!

And the RB320 and the new STi aren't ugly or bland, surely?

I, for one, think the 2003+ Impreza a desirable shape and the new one awful.

Whether the interior plastics are now "bobbled" for that upmarket German feel I don't know, but it's not a key point for most buyers. If that's what's wanted, they'd get an Audi A3.

The 'blobeye' (2003-05) and 'hawkeye' ('05-'07) were fine IMHO. I reckon they stole the idea for the hawkeye shape off SEAT. They actually look pretty nice in the flesh - especially in the right colour (not silver). Dark blue and dark pearl red look good. I like Legacies in the dark pearl red as well (Garnet red, I believe). They look bland in silver.

People ramble on about the 'quality of the interior', but I've seen plenty and they hold up well to the miles and hard use.

The older Impreza was not pretty but it did have a sort of brutish appeal to it. The last one (hawkeye) was the best. A lot of new cars look a bit bland and even ugly IMHO. Looks alone would put me off a BMW 1-series, it takes its styling cues from a Nike training shoe.

The new Impreza is a bit bland and I believe its performance and handling has been 'softened' up. Given time that may be a good thing for Subaru. I think they had taken the market for the old one as far as it could go. The new one looks more practical as a good value small-medium hatchback family car and I for one would certainly choose it over equivalent Focus/Astra models. My Legacy does not have blistering performance, but is very solid and very satisfying to drive. Every trip is a pleasure. There is a depth of engineering that puts these cars on a different plant to a Ford (I write as a happily ex-Ford Mondeo owner).
