The Vectra 2.0 dti has a reputation for very high levels of oil consumption - some searches on this site will yield some illuminating discussions. The Mondeo tddi is an old design diesel that has a reputation for being reliable but a bit agricultural and lethargic but given that it's replacement the tdci unit is establishing a reputation for emptying owners' bank accounts then perhaps the tddi will make some sort of popularity comeback. Engines apart, you might find the Vectra a more relaxed drive especially motorway cruising and the Mondeo a more involving and rewarding drive. Both are "big" estate cars not lifestyle estates. Having driven both, I'd buy the Mondeo and probably go for a petrol and put the money I saved over buying an outdated diesel towards the slightly higher fuel costs (and RFT).

The biggest criticism I've heard of the old TDDI Mondeo unit is its thirst. Apparently high 30's is yer lot even driven gently.

Not at all, a TDDi will do 45 to 50 it is just not as refined or punchy as a TDCi.

Re the OP you must mean Mondeo 2.0 (so 115 or 130?) therefore do you mean Vectra 1.9 or 2.0? The Vectra 2.0 DTi is unrefined and not that powerful (though by all acounts fairly dependable), the newer Vectra 1.9 120/150 is better in both respects though not as torquey as a Mondeo 130 and feels less lively even in 150 form. The Mondeo also benefits from a chain cam engine and is a sharper drive, also IME Ford dealers are MUCH better. I had Vauxhalls for 9 years through to 2002 and the dealers were a nightmare.

Otherwise along with an E-Class these two are the best large estates you can get.
