(94 to 99) 1.9D Fuel Filter Problems - Chambo
Can't figure out what I Have done wrong, took of the filter, filled the new one with fuel, put it back on and it just won't start. Noticed some air in the pipe. Any help? I know on my old peugeot, you could pump the fuel by hand, but not on this :(

{No mention of the year car registered, so picked info up from drop down list - DD}

Some Filters are directional, but should have arrow on side.
Mate's modern diesel when misfuelled and drained and refilled needed something pressing
to get fuel back to engine, Must be some technique to get fuel primed, if a low pressure system, if no other techique, connect some clear pipe to fuel line at engine and try sucking it through, when it appears in clear pipe, stop sucking. Ideally use a professional syphon kit. Do you have the original manual or haynes manual.

Yer, there must be something, but I can't see anything to press or pull. I don't have the manual and the person that I know who might have one is away.

There should be a hand pump somewhere, or something that looks like one of those things doctors use to take your blood pressure, a swelled bit of pipe in the fuel line that you have to squeeze to bleed the air. If there isn't anything like that I would take off the fuel pipe that comes from the filter and goes into the injecotr pump, then get someone to crank the engine until diesel comes out of the pipe. When/if it does then reconnect the pipe to the pump then hopefully it should fire.

No pump bit unfortunately. I'll have a go at trying to get the pipe off.

Fill the new filter with diesel before you fit it. I do this by fitting the filter, connect the supply and return lines, then fill with diesel from a jug through the bypass connection on the filter. Then fit the fuel bypass connector. You will also need to slacken off one or two of the lines at the injectors to allow the air out whilst turning the engine over. Once fuel is to the injectors, tighten these lines. Too late now but I always change the filter when the engine is hot, it makes starting easier!!

Try loosening off a couple of the pipe unions at the injectors and crank it until some diesel squirts out, then retighten.

Usually these will start for a few secs with the fuel left in the lines, before cranking on the starter for a bit to prime the system. Like someone else said, check the direction arrows on the filter.
Regarding the bypass valve, I believe it shuts off the return to the tank when ambient temp is cold, to recycle 'warm' fuel back through the filter. So you may need to put a rag on top of the filter and pour boiling water over it to open the valve to enable air to bleed back to the tank.

Hi there,

My 1.9 SDI requires a lot of cranking to start up after changing the fuel filter. I like to make sure the battery is well changed before I swap it.

I am not aware of any manual pump in the line anywhere. Like the others said, make sure you fill the filter with clean fuel, and make sure you have not reversed the connections, but you may have to expect a fair wait before it will start. I would not like to put a figure on how many seconds mine takes, but it seems like forever.

It's much better not to crank the blazes out of SDi or TDi VAG diesels when changing the filter. It's bad for the starter and bad for the tandem pump (TDi) and is unnecessary.

Use an oil gun in reverse connected to the outlet port of the new filter and draw the fuel into it from the vehicle tank. I use a 1 litre Wanner gun which works a treat. Surplus fuel can then be squirted back into the tank via the filler. My TDi starts instantly and runs without hesitation using this method. Observe the most scrupulous cleanliness at the filter outlet.

Diesels are not tolerant of sloppy maintenance procedures - dealers please note.

Thank you for the tip. I will bear this in mind next time I change the filter.
