1997 2.0 litre - stalling when slowing down - annie
I have a 2 litre Vectra 1997. It has started stalling, it idles ok when stopped, and starts just fine, but stalls when I slow down , not always sometimes it drives just fine, other times it stalls every time I slow down. I have been told 1) the air sensor flow needs replacing £120.0 + vat + labour ) or 2) it may be the idle air valve £40.0 + vat=labour. I cannot afford to fork out for both any ideas or advise appreciated+

The idle air valve on Vauxhalls responds well to cleaning to get rid of the carbonised oil which blocks the idle mechanism.

Find a good independent garage.

If cleaning is too much of a faff there's usually plenty of sources of new ones - about 40-60quid, or even a second hand one, for example:-

Fitting is a 10 minute job, from personal experience.

Before cleaning the idle stepper control valve, you need to clean the throttle body THOROUGHLY. This means a garage if you can't DIY that takes the whole t/b off and gets it squeaky clean, particularly unblocking 2 holes beneath the throttle plate "butterfly" - that's usually the cause of stalling but not always. The plate itself needs to be clean too. These holes are breathers/vents that lead to hoses. The hoses need to be checked for blockages too. Only after all breathers are clear and an oil separator modification is fitted to stop oil blowing into the throttle body again should you proceed to having a new idle valve or cleaning the old one. As it happens, they can often be cleaned off the car at the same time as the throttle body.

There are other things that can cause stalling but this is a good place to start. But it's no good your garage just spraying some carb cleaner in here and there and hoping for the best. They must clean both thoroughly and particularly the breather holes that are under the flap. No squirting and shoulder shrugs - got to be very thorough.

If you go to a Vauxhall garage they may put in the new modified idle valve, denoted by an X in the part number. That one requires a software upgrade which they should do too.

No point having a new idle control stepper motor (idle valve unit) if your throttle body is dirty and you don't have the oil separator in place to stop oil messing up the throttle body and idle valve again. The oil sep part is only £15, you can get a new idle valve on ebay for £35. Non genuine parts aren't always good, but had no problem with mine.

I do though have a different problem with my own car but had the stalling problem too and the above sorted that out 100%.
