Maybe the person responsible for sending out the gritters should check that website!
It made for a downright dangerous situation on a fast road.
It was raining when I left Northampton for Peterborough, but by the time I turned around and got back as far as Kettering, it was snowing properly, couldnt even read the road signs.

I expected snow all day today up here in yorkshire, but all we got was cold rain.
To be honest if we had a hard cold winter with lots of snow rain and sleet i think it would be good for the motor industry, good for the after sales of things like batteries and repairs and also good for the public at large, as in MY opinion too many people dont know how to control a car in a bit of rain never mind 2 inches of snow.
no disrespect to you stuart and any others im sure you know what i mean plus you would get more work valeting out snow covered interiors (indoors though;-) )

I certainly got some snow driving experience down today - stopping my van without hitting anything solid was er, rather exciting but not in a good way - opposite lock in a Suzuki Carry isnt quite the same as in a BMW - the lack of weight at the rear end play hell with traction - I got a lot of momentum practice tonight!
I draw the line at working in snow - cold ground seems to make my Karcher freeze up and no job is in profit if the equipment breaks. Id rather be a bit poorer but much warmer, plus, Ebay is always good for a few quid :=)

It was coming down in North Essex earlier in the evening but not laying.

For all the people complaining about the lack of gritters and dangerous road situations. Tough, drive as the conditions allow.
I was looking forward to driving to work with snow in the ground this morning, but by 6:30am almost all of the snow had melted

was hammering down the A1 from dancaster last night, it was wet, the odd short blizzard but not laying ont he road. The A1/A14 junc was clear of any kind of snow.

Gritting is not the panacea for all ills.
If you grit when it is raining - it washes away and certainly where I was the snowfall started as rain. It only really works against the formation of ice, on a road that was dry in the first place. A blizzard will lay anyway, salt or no salt. True, salt delays the laying but for a surprisingly short period of time.
I get fed up with "they did not grit " moaners - and I'm not a gritter driver, just have some idea of the problems they face.

It was nice to see the snow-plough working in South Shropshire last night. My drive to work at 5.30 this morning was 'fun' as its the first time in 3years that I've driven in snow in a CAR, as I've had a 4x4 for the past few years!
What was a normally average sized A road soon turned into a small track in the centre of the road because of all the trees overhanging the road etc..
Still, all good fun!

"The A1/A14 junc was clear of any kind of snow"
Are there different kinds of snow RF? Name three different kinds then.

Maybe but what about the fortune we spend on council and road tax? I agree that one should drive for the conditions but the road conditions should not be allowed to get so bad!

This is what you nned to do, let 15% of your tyre pressure out so you increase your foot print and make your tyre walk on the back edge thus emptying the tread pattern. Having lived in Scotland for 25 years you come to learn these things when all other are stuck and you drive past. If you have a compressor with you then reduce your pressures further even by 30% and keep your speed down. When the conditions allow pump them back up. Regards Peter

Powder snow, flake snow, and that catch all, the wrong kind of snow.
Just fetching my hat and coat....

Don't know what it was like "out east" but on the Towcester side of Northampton the snow was completely unexpected. BBC forecast suggested it was possible above 1000 feet - doubt there's anywhere in the County over 600.
Went out at 17:30 in heavy rain, ferrying daughter where she'd normally walk; any grit laid then would have been washed straight down the drain. Temp +3 according to Xant's OAT display. Noted wet sleet at around 18:30 and by 19:00 it was snowing lumps. Roofs and roads soon covered to about an inch.
Slushy/slippy when collecting Bromptonette at 20:30 but nothing to be bothered about if you grew up on the Pennine fringes:-).
Turned to rain again c22:00 and all gone when I left for work at 06:40 today.

Precisely - I pay money for this service, so if I dont receive it, I am quite rightly annoyed. Its sounds like there are some Labour spokespersons in here who say tough it out when you dont get services you pay for - thats their new slogan is it not?
I did infact drive for the conditions and didnt do more than 20 mph for 9 miles. Mind numbing at best.
I drive a commercial vehicle which does not have car levels of grip, thats just the way it is. It is rear wheel drive and when unladen, rear grip is terrible in snow.
So should I change my vehicle at my expense, or expect services to be supplied, already at my expense on the rare occasions they are required?
Sorry but im not the type to accept that things I pay for I may or may not receive - I pay for them, I expect to get them, regardless of the poor, poor council worker who has to go out in the cold and watch the weather forecast.
