What tyres at Costco? - Nomag
I need new front tyres for my Leon FR TDI, down to the wear markers after 16k miles on the factory fit Pirelli P Zero Rosso, it's on standard 17" alloys and if I remember correctly the tyres are 225x45
I've been quite happy with the Pirellis, but then I've nothing to compare with on this car. I drive it hard and it has a big heavy diesel engine so I suppose 16k miles is acceptable for the fronts (plenty of tread left at the back)
Anyway, I can now join Costco as I work for the NHS, and I was wondering if this would be worthwhile just for the tyres. Can anybody give me any advice as to what they stock (a lot of mention of Michellin in previous threads), likely costs and what tyres if any I should go for?
Many thanks.

You can get any make of tyre you like at Costco - As long as it is a Michelin that you want - they stock only Michelins.

If you buy 2 tyres a year you will be in pocket even after paying the membership fee of £23 (IIRC).

I do not know the cost of 225x45 but my son saved £85 on each tyre for his BMW 330 which had chunky tyres, compared to Kwik-fit 2 years ago. The last 2 I bought saved £20 / tyre compared to a local Independent Tyre Co - they had cheaper tyres but could not match the Michelin prices.

In Derby there is an independent tyre firm, near the Brunswick and Alex, that will sell you Michelin tyres cheaper than Costco. Also they will fit them on the front if you want, Costco won't, even if you beg them.
The best time to go to Costco for tyres is when they have a special offer, then they are cheap.

Well I want them on the front....yes I know you are supposed to have the best tyres on the back but surely I am going to have to then pay costco to switch all the tyres around (unless I get the trolley jack out and do it before I leave)
I will research the Michelin vs Pirelli options and prices online and then price up Costco on Sunday when I am passing by in Gateshead
Interesting about the place in Derby....a long way from me but my folks do live there so if I can make this set last until Xmas...

They''ll swop the tyres around at no charge - as others have noted, they simply won't put the new tyres on the front. On our Jazz, I just swopped them back when I got home.

My Merc has different size front and rears so can't be swopped and they told me that won't fit fronts on their own unless the backs are nearly new. I found a local specialist just beat their price anyway (for the same tyres).

They've cut back on the special offers - used to be an extra 20% off a couple of times a year but you had to buy 4 tyres. The discount this autumn is much less.

Michelin Michelin Michelin. No choice!
But I have used them, decent deal for an all in price, rebalanced the 2 wheels that were remaining on the car, they did exactly what they said they would. Much cheaper than the nice guys at ATS even after a haggle.
Only thing is .... if tyres are swapped front to back etc .... I (maybe its just me ...) like to keep them on same side so direction doesnt swap. If you are same watch out - I suggest chalk mark the tyres - as they wont let you in the workshop.
Costco have a deal on at the moment if you buy 4 tyres.
They also do good deals on Bosch Silver batteries, but they wont fit those.

Slightly off-topic but presumably if you take a Renault into Costco that is fitted with the Renault's Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and require a pair of tyres fitting to the front wheels then they will have to put the new tyres on the front wheels and leave them there. On Renaults fitted with this system you cannot move the wheels around from corner to corner without having a Renault dealer reset the tyre pressure monitoring system.

Well your wrong about that mate, because costco will put the new tyre's on the back rim's and fit the origional rear tyre's to the front rim's without getting them mixed up! so in other word's there's no way out of it.

Yep. Tried to do that with my Merc. Until the realised the tyres are different sizes front and rear.

They didn't have the rear tyre size in stock (they weren't anywhere near needing replacement anyway) so their solution was to take the new tyres off the front, put the old ones back on and put my order on hold until they had all 4 tyres.

I eventually got the store general manager to tell the fitters to do as I wanted and I had to sign a waiver to that effect. The tyre depot manager was gracious about it, but said it's the first time they'd ever done it. BP 1 - Costco 0. :)

One of my work colleagues drives a Leon Cupra R. His car came with 18" 225/40 Pirelli Rosso. Having now driven the car 10K from new he has had to replace the fronts. He has fitted Michelin Pilots, and reckons they are comparable. Depends on your driving style really.I use Costco and find they are competetive for Michelin tyres(thats the only make they sell)

I have a Mk2 Leon on 224/45/R17's and am currently running Dunlop SP SportMaxx on all corners. After 20k km the fronts have about 3-4k km left in them, the rears look like new. I find they give a good balance of grip and longevity as the Leons are known to eat tyres if tracking is even slightly out. They are also good in terms of ride and road noise.

Previously had Goodyear Eagle F1's which were excellent but 16k km of careful driving and the fronts were shot.
