Engine knock noise when foot off the accelerator - Lisa Hawkins
Whenever i lift my foot of the accelerator i get a knocking sound in the left handside of engine/gearbox regardless of what gear im in and what speed im doing, but not when im stopped! The noise appears to clear when the clutch is depressed. My dad doesn't think its the little ends rattling on the engine, but could be the gearbox or constant velocity joint? Any ideas?

sounds like a broken engine/gearbox mounting

Is it a 1.4? The box in these is a bit weak and the diff breaks up - this sort of behaviour is often the first sign....

yep it's a 1.4, would this explain why the gear change is quite often tricky? Does it mean a replacement gearbox?

Possibly

I think so, yes. Try a forum search, there was a thread about it not so long ago, otherwise, try a net search - it's a well known problem....
