Seen a couple of Touareg's on the continent, with R5 TDI badging.
Heard of a V5, but what on earth is an R5?! Do VW do a 5-cylinder diesel?
|
Half a V-10 ?
I thought the older VR5 was a 'nearly-inline' engine - i.e. a narrow angle (single block) V5, whereas I think this R5 is a straight / in-line 5 cylinder engine.

It is indeed a 2.5l 5 cylinder diesel. It's probably a straight 5 cylinder and not a V5 because they refer to the 3.0 diesel as a V6 so the R5 almost certainly is a straight 5.
Not sure if it's badged R5 in the UK but it is one of the engines available.

Don't know about an R5 TDI, but parked round the corner from my place last week was a shiny black Touareg with German plates and W12 badging. Presumably this is the Phaeton engine? Don't think it's available here so haven't bothered dreaming about it (lhd only)

Presumably the R stands for Reihenmotor, i.e., in line engine, rather than V configuration.
de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reihenmotor
The R5 is available in Australia and has 174hp and is a 2.5 litre, 5-cylinder engine - I'm not sure if the 2.5 diesel we had here was a 5-cylinder but I suspect it was.
|
Most VW vans are 2.5 5-cyl diesels in various states of tune.

R5 or Reihenmotor 5 is typical German efficiency and accuracy then: "Says what it means on the tin"

I had a look through Audi driver mag today whilst in WHSmith and this engine was mentioned. It is one half of the V10 diesel. VAG are also to introduce a petrol 5 cylinder which is half the V10 engine from RS 6 and Lamborghini and soon to be in the R8.
The writer of the article had been to Germany to meet Audi designers and suggested a V10 turbo could see 550bhp , all the guy did was point to the sky as if to suggest "been there, done that and gone further"!
|
There may be a V5 diesel in VW somewhere but the R5 is an inline 5-cylinder engine.
