How safe a buy is a 3yo BMW 320d - jm1
Having sold my auction sourced Audi A3 TDi recently I was contemplating returning to auction to buy an E46 320d off the fleet, probably 2004 around 80K for about 8-9K. However I have been alarmed by reports of very expensive repairs to the turbo. Would I be better off going for an older 330d or do I need to up my budget and look at an E90. Might even consider going japanese if any suggestions for a sporting diesel.

Grateful for your thoughts.

Lovely cars, but they do have problems with the turbo which isn't such a big deal really, more worrying is they can have a problem with the inlet manifold, which has throttle flaps on the 150hp version (the one you are probably looking for) , anyway the inlet manifold can split and allow the throttle flaps to be sucked into the engine with devastating results.

If you trawl BMWland you will find the long running thread on this problem.
Having said that i daresay there are thousands of them flying round with starship mileages and no problems at all, apparently the 330d has the same design and can suffer the same problems.

Glad you mentioned Japanese sporting diesels, i wonder how many of us would be running round in Toyo Camry's and similar if they had only put a fast 3.0 litre diesel of their own manufacture into them, i've never understood why they have never entered this market, in fact its only the last couple of years you could have a diesel auto from Japan that wasn't a grey.

I would imagine the Lexus diesel is still too new to be in the budget you mention, whether that would be swift enough i know not.

Lexus diesel has the same 180ps motor that the Avensis has

The troublesome turbo design was changed on cars manufactuered after November 2003. So, any 2004 car should be fine.

Thanks for the info about the change in turbo for 2004 cars. Do you know if the inlet manifold problem was sorted at the same time?

Not sure about that bit.

We have a 2002 320D - the turbo duly went pop at 90k. BMW paid 60% of the cost of replacement, eventhough it was well out of the warranty.

Now on 110k. We drive it quite hard. It has returned 46mpg (OBC says 52mpg - I wish) since the turbo change. No other problems. I now change oil every 9k, as opposed to when the car tells me to do so.

around here there more savy Beemer driver takes his/her ailing German saloon to a specialist, where they fix it and provide you with a courtesy car or pick the car up or what ever suits you best for a fraction of the price of the main dealer.

Just wish they did Honda's.

When I looked at a replacement car 5 years ago I looked in a dealer that seemed to specialise in ex company cars. holey dash boards, dirty seats, fag burns. Get a cherished private car.

Which specialist and where is "around here" ?? I've got a 2001 320D that hasn't had a fix, so would be interested to know if its reasonably local to Bedford

TokSik,

If you need a high quality and reasonable cost BMW independent and can travel to Aylesbury then contact BM Worx and ask for Stuart or Russell. I use them myself and have no hesitation in recommending them both for quality and price. They also offer courtesy cars if you give them enough notice. tel no. is 01296 614646.
