Removing White Lines - Sim-O
"Some Aberdeenshire roads could have their white lines removed under plans to improve safety.
The system is known as psychological traffic calming, aimed at making drivers slow down and take more care because they are confused."

Oh dear.
It'll slow people down alright, because they'll end up in hedges and other vehicles.

They've been doing this to a few roads round here - little or no difference seem by me to traffic speeds.

removal of white lines, driving on the hard shoulder, crikey what next? this country is going backwards

I thought the whole point of white lines was as a safety aid.
The line reflects the road conditions ahead.
Sounds more like a penny pinching County Council looking to save a few pounds on paint.

What next ? Street lights being removed on safety grounds to avoid glare ?

That has already been done on the A40 Westway ( Whitecity till it comes to ground past the Edgeware Rd).
All the lamp posts have been chopped off and just stumps left.
It has been like it for ages but is OK because there are signs saying " NO street lights"

I wish they'd remove some of the white lines in the Lincoln area. They're about 8"-12" in from the kerb (presumably to mark the edge of cyclists' territory) and in the dark it's easy to imagine that they're at the edge of the carriageway. Get too close and you've hit the kerb.

Good to see how much room you allow cyclists then!

It's got nothing to do with how much room I allow cyclists. In fact I needn't have mentioned them at all. The relevant point is that in the dark the lines could be mistaken for marking the edge of the carriageway when in fact they're 8" to 12" onto the pavement, i.e. the other side of the kerb.

Read this article for more information on so-called 'shared space':

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shared_space

Apparently it significantly reduces accident rates.

am i the only person that doesnt trust a word wikpedia says?
but uses it as a sort of first reference only?
no offence james86

I'm not saying it's true - but it is an interesting point of view. I've heard about the shared space schemes before (no idea where) and the same conclusion was drawn. There are some references at the bottom of the wikipedia article as well which would be interesting reading.

There are lots of arguments for less traffic lights in particular (more so when we see that often the effect of a set not working is that traffic flows better through a junction, with everyone driving slower & carefully but ultimately getting through quicker)
