98 2.1td Replacing Cat - gsb
I have just got the old Cat off. In the new fixing kit is a sealing ring to go between the two flanges, this appears to be made of a sort of compressed wire material presumably to allow a bit of flex together with the spring mounted bolts.

Yes; that's what it's for. Getting the remains of the old one off can be fun.

This was all of my post. don't know what happened to it. thanks

I have just got the old Cat off. In the new fixing kit is a sealing ring to go between the two flanges, this appears to be made of a sort of compressed wire material presumably to allow a bit of flex together with the spring mounted bolts. Problem is the old one is stuck to the manifold end. Has anyone any ideas how to get it off (it's not the easiest thing to get at). Or shall I take a chance and fit the new cat using tho old one. According to Haynes if you damage the exhaust manifold it's an engine out job.

Tapping a spike into it at an angle and levering it to bits was the usual way; mind you, it has been a few years since I last did one.

Take care of the dust hazard.

And remember the scrap value of the old one.

Pugugly {P} Scrap value of what? the old Cat. Am I being had? (embarrassed smiley) or does it really have a value?

I believe so full of expensive metals that the Chinese want badly, there was a thread here a few weeks ago that discussed same.

Yep take it down to your local scrap metal dealer and depending on its size, you should walk away with £25 - £30.

Simon. Thanks, I will give it a try.

Screwloose, would it be a bad idea to leave the old one on. Off to buy the Cat tomorrow,
Luckily can use daughters car for work.

Those joints can rust and squeak as they age; but you could leave it.

What's wrong with your diesel cat? They aren't a legal requirement, so why on earth would you buy another one?

Thanks for the quick response, I was aware that they aren't needed but don't know where I can get a decat pipe. I thought there might have been a small leak a couple of weeks ago but yesterday the car sounded like a tank, the pipe where it is welded to the front of the actual cat has a whole almost 75% of the way round. When I got under it today two of the exhaust rubber hangers had snapped so there obviously had been a lot of stress on the pipe.

cant you just buy a straight through pipe substitute from an exhaust supplier?
your cat might be worthless as there may be nowt left in there, dont book a meal on the expected bonus

Ahh; I see. Maybe just fix the hangers and get a welder to repair the cracked weld?

Have you had a price on that diesel cat? The van ones are £900-odd. They just get gutted and re-fitted.
Peugeot 406 98 2.1td Replacing Cat - gsb
Screwloose. The whole is actually in the pipe just in front of the weld, I hadn't thought about seeing if it could be welded, I will look in the morning to see how bad the pipe is.

My local pug place do the Cat for about £110 + vat about the same as GSF.
For a laugh I asked Peugeot, they want about £280 +

bell boy. I was told that wasn't an option as the 2.1td was only fitted for about two years and they all had Cats
