2000 model Headlight adjustment - Tim Allcott
Having problems with both headlights. The electronic adjustment still works, but the highest position is set "too low" so light spread forward is VERY low on dip. Anyone worked on these, or had a similar problem? Presumably the electronic adjustment mechanism is similar to that on other Audis...

What year and what type of headlights? How did this come about?
Headlight adjustment - Tim Allcott
Sorry, SL : 2000 model year, 1.9 Tdi. Don't recall how it came about: Car is usually driven by wife. She complained about headlights, and I didn't take her seriously, but she is correct! When using electric adjustment, headlights will still go lower (correct adjustment for heavy load) but, when returned to highest position are way too low.

Not HIDs then? There should be manual adjusters on each headlight to set the beam level with the internal adjuster set fully up.

Did someone try and adjust them, or has it taken a heavy knock [hit a kerb/pheasant?] and the reflectors have jumped off their pegs.

I'll try to get my mitts on the car tomorrow. Only things I can think of are i) I've changed the bulbs (albeit road legal: one of the Halfords "brighter" range, IIRC) in an attempt to make them brighter, and ii) there is a lever by either bulb to adjust the dip when taking the car abroad. I've set and reset that a few times. Still, the weather's supposed to be good tomorrow: She'll have to take the Smart. Thanks for your suggestions: I'll report back.

sounds like its had a little bump at the front!

If it had had a bump I don't think the lights would be symetrical, it is possible but I doubt it.
I have an A3 and the lights are set low on this as well. This was also the case on my mk.4. golf. If you visit any Audi or VW forum you will find that this is quite a common complaint. There should be a white knob on top of each light unit that allows you to move it up or down. I would put some marks on the unit to show the original position so that you can move them back to the original settings before the MOT , as if you adjust them without an alignment board you might move them above the legal limit.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, Shaun. Yes, one white knob is missing. I'm now trying to avoid having to pay in excess of £200 for a new headlamp unit.... will check the breakers today. My non-franchised specialist tells me the mechanisms sieze up, and that is why the plastic gears fall off... examine the car when it's light tomorrow.

Just come across this. I assume you have solved it by now. I had the same problem but solved it by removing the plastic cogs and revealing the metal shaft to which I attached an electrical connector which allowed me to pull the headlight up and then adjust by turning the shaft, Crude but effective ( and lasts longer than the cheap plastic effort it replaced). I have had to do it on both headlights ( I have an A6 TDI 2.5 V regd with 160,000 miles on the clock).

Thanks for your comments: what sort of electrical connector? I have solved the problem by lifting the headlight up and supporting it with a block of wood! (vorsprung durch it's broken) at least my wife (main driver) doesn't complain quite so much about how little light there is at night now (and she was right, too) but I have sourced a replacement headlight. All I need now is some drier, warmer weather, and knowledge of how to remove the front bumper.
