Number 1 son has just bought a T4 van (no side windows) which has been part converted into a camper van. Should he insure it as a camper van or as a normal commercial van. He will be using it as a private vehicle no for business.

A camper van. He will find that some insurers won't want to cover it, though. Reasons will vary - either because its a i) van, ii) a conversion or iii) a camper/minibus. Some will also charge a higher premium the same vehicle in van form than a camper based on the same model, arguing that vans are involved in more accidents.

You will have to insure it as per log book not what you want to call it,if and when they ask for any modifications you are obliged to tell them.

Ring www.adrianflux.co.uk/ and ask them. They do lots of converted van/camper insurance.

There are a lot of specialists that advertise in the VW magazines. The more complete the conversion the lower the premium so it might be worth putting some effort in before insuring it if possible.
