I've lubed the pedal mechanism etc but the pedal is still v jerky and uneven - any idea where i should squirt some WD40 please?

It is almost certainly a nylon lined cable so WD40 should make little difference.Has the routing been disturbed or is the stiffness in the pedal or whatever is connected at the other end.

I had a similar problem (but not on a Punto) with a lined cable.
Undid the cable and fed clean engine oil down it until it appeared at the other end (took 2 hours) of constantly pulling and pushing the inner cable in and out to work the oil down. It was worth it though, solved the problem. Even nylon lined outers can dry out completely, especially if they've got hot where they are routed near to exhaust manifolds/pipes etc. Fresh lubrication can solve the problem.
If not, sounds like a new cable is in order perhaps?
