Saw his rebuilds of 1930s Auto Union GP cars at Donington a few years ago - absolutely fantastic (especially the noise!)

Yes I saw these at Donington too - along with one of one of the original quattro rally cars (à la Michèle Mouton/Walter Röhrl), some sort of touring race car and the Audi R8 Le mans winner. The last three were out on track at the same time - with the quattro cornering spectacularly, the R8 doing about 2 laps for every 1 of the quattro, and the comparatively uninteresting (for me) touring car somewhere in the middle. Maybe it as the same occasion?
Sad that Gardiner should leave us so relatively young. I especially enjoyed this bit from the Telegraph article with his slightly non-pc quote -
[quote]When Audi insisted on manufacturing the V16-cylinder engine crankshaft for these cars, it failed Gardiner's rigorous inspection; and when an Audi committee quibbled endlessly over technical details Gardiner told them: "Listen, all you've got to do is sign the cheques and tell us how big you want the swastikas painted."[unquote]
