Best car for rear wheelchair access, plus 4 ? - tintin01
I am asking on behalf of a friend. She is a single parent with 3 children. Her 14 year old son has various disabilities and often uses a wheelchair.

He will get in/out of their mpv, but at times takes a lot of persuading to get in/out. She is now thinking that she may get a car which has a ramp and allows his chair to be secured in place. However, this would obviously involve adapting a vehicle - she really needs his wheelchair space plus (preferably) 4 other seats (driver, 2 children, carer).

She is looking at the Motorbility scheme, but which vehicle would meet their needs the best? I don't think she wants anything bigger than a Picasso. A quick look on the internet suggests that Kangoos are popular for adaptation, but am I right in thinking that the wheelchair space takes up all the back seat? Can a Zafira be converted in this fashion but still have the first two rows of seats left in place? Any suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance.

I expect she'll need the headroom of a Kangoo, Picasso or Peugeot Partner (the van-type MPV frequently seen as a wheelchair-accessible taxi around Dublin, among other towns) to accomodate her son sitting in his wheelchair.

If she wants room for the other two children, the extra width of a six-seat MPV (I'm thinking Honda FRV or Fiat Multipla) might suit - that may allow enough space for wheelchair + 1 in the back, and still with space for two passengers in the front. Both cars have shorter kerb length than the Zafira or Touran, too, so she may find them easier to drive if she's keen to avoid larger vehicles.

The other possibility is a short-wheelbase VW Caravelle. Yes, it looks bigger than a Picasso, but they're easy to drive (SWMBO tried one and loved it) and the dimensions aren't really much bigger than a Zafira when it comes to it. Being nigh-on square, though, you can make maximum use of the interior volume.

Thanks for the help so far. Both the Voyager and the Doblo sound worth looking into, thanks for those links, guys. I saw a Doblo this afternoon and was surprised how large the vertical boot is. Although he is quite a big lad, he uses just a standard fold up wheelchair.

We went to a Peugeot dealer today to look at a couple of vehicles (neither adapted). The member of staff was trying to explain the hire purchase and contract hire options. The Peugeot partner combi (is this the same as Berlingo or Doblo? looks very similar) appeared to cost £200 a week on the Motability contract hire scheme. which I thought was very expensive. I would normally suggest she buy used to avoid depreciation, but it seems that you don't pay VAT on Motability cars so there she may as well buy new. It all seems pretty complicated, but I can see how it could be abused.

Can i suggest you post the same question in the following website. It is mainly used by disabled people, some in similar position as yourself.

Had a look at the DLA website. The advance payment for the Peug Partner combi is £699. Then you pay the full mobility payment each week which is £45/week for three years. As you know everything is paid for apart from fuel.

Hope this link works

don't know where you got £200/week from unless the figure is for an adapted/modified car.

The old model Ctiroen Despatch is a good choice especially with the Hdi diesel engine, as is the VW transporter/caravelle but I suspect it will bw much too big

Thanks for those links and ideas. The £200 was the figure the saleswoman said - she pointed to it on her computer screen. My friend said "That's monthly?", she definitely said, "No, that's per week." She seemed to be their Motability specialist so I would have expected her to know. I agree, though - on the Motability site the prices start around £50 a week. Even the hire purchase doesn't cost that much.

My mate (who is unable to walk at all) had a Renault Scenic - not very good, as the height of the loading floor was too steep for the wheelchair to get up.

He now has a Kangoo, which has quite a low floor (which is why it's approved for taxi use) and can simply drive his motorised chair straight in. It was modified by Motability so has the proper securing points - and seat belts!.

It does limit the number of seats available for other pasengers.

The thing that he says you need to watch out for is the height of the loading platform. Wheelchairs are not light - especially if you are the disbaled person trying to hold yourself up while folding a wheelchair and trying to lift it 3 feet in the air to get it onto a loading platform such as the Zafira / Scenic / Picasso. Even worse is the Caravelle apparently - ropes and climbing gear required!

Mother in law has a converted berlingo which has seats for 4 + wheelchair user, we have been very pleased with it.
It is a constable conversion and although we got it s/hy it was a motability vehicle.
We looked at a number of conversions and a number of base vehicles and reckoned constables were about the best of the conversions.
If she wants to look at the secondhand route we got our one at GF Clarke in Kent if thats the right area for you
Hope this helps

Friend of ours has a Y reg Renault Kangoo. He can drive his wheel chair in no problem as its quite a shallow ramp. The seating arrangement is driver,& passenger in the front one seat in the rear next to the wheel chair and it has plenty of room for storage and numerous cubby holes.
Apart from routine service it has been no problem.
The car was sourced from Gowrings of Newbury I belive and they may be worth a call if you are looking second hand as they take these sort of cars in part exchange.

We have a Renault Kangoo with wheelchair accessible conversion. It was supplied by Gowrings. The vehicle comes with one rear seat as standard, but we have an additional one fitted for £550 which would give you your 4 seats.

It's worth noting that most of the Doblo conversions I have seen acheive their headroom by a 'high roof' conversion rather than low floor (as we have). The resulting higher loading floor height means the fold out ramp is much longer which can be a pain in some parking situations.
