What is PG driving now ? I?ve just read the road test for the VW Polo Bluemotion. It looks very economical without too much complication. Perhaps she will be heading that way.

A mkV Golf Tdi, but only the 1.9tdi sport. Brilliant fuel economy (had an average of 57mpg doing 70 in traffic on the M27 earlier) but otherwise fairly unexciting. And I'm saving loads by driving a diesel with all the silly driving about I have to do for work.

I think I'd find it hard to find another Polo that I loved as much as the original, but if there's a Bluemotion Golf around in 2010 (the end of my lease unless I can persuade someone else to take it on) I'd be interested.

74.3 mpg combined? I am impressed. Well done VW.

I take it that this makes it (on paper at least) the most economical car one can buy?

Tyro how do you work that out?

Well, the 74.3 comes from here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road_tests/index.htm

Not sure if that answers your question.

Sorry Tyro, I thought you were referring to PGs Golf, not the Polo!!!

I hope VW have improved this three cylinder engine since the early one I drove. A horrid, nasty, rough affair it was.

Assuming that they have, I still don't really see the point of these highly economical small cars. If you do a high mileage whereby the diesel ecomony really starts to make sense, then would you want to do it in a Polo - or any small car? 25000 miles ina Polo, Fiesta etc. No thanks. Golf or Focus maybe.

I did 40,000 miles in just over 2 years in an A2 1.4TDi and it was as comfortable over long distances as my current A3 and A4s I have driven - it certainly didn't feel like a small car.

The 1.4 was rough on cold idle, but power delivery was excellent, as was economy.

As regards the Bluemotion if HJ report is correct you won't need to do anywhere near 25,000 a year to take advantage of the economy. 60mpg from a small petrol engined car isn't easily achievable, despite what manufacturers figures say.

Most comments on small cars and long journeys are based imo on the 1960/70s. I have driven 400 miles plus in a day in fiesta/Yaris/106!... and it was stressfull than a Rover 800..

Of course if you want to cruise at 85mph....

Yeah, but not knowing if you're going to make it to your destination at all can't do the blood pressure any good. ;-)
