"Liberal Democrats..?"

Who they...?

A bunch of people who can declare a "policy", safe in the knowledge that it will never ever get the sanction of the electorate.

If by some miracle, they were to come up with some "policy" which incorporated joined-up thinking, their prospects might change. I've yet to see the slightest sign of this happening though.

No point - after all, oil (and hence petrol) is going to run out by 1980. Or so I was taught in school.

Dull party looking for an angle to interest us with their hypocrisy - problem is they are bit slow on the uptake

Most of us are fed up with the whole global warming / climate change hype; and thats coming from me, someone who really cares of saving energy.

My problem is they way the government and media bodies portray us as the mass contributors when they dont do enough and feed us incorrect or mis-leading facts about the causes and preventions of climate change. Its basically turned into a money spinning band wagon and they have all latched onto it like blood sucking business men that they are trying to fool us.

"a money spinning band wagon and they have all latched onto it like blood sucking business men that they are trying to fool us."

Too true, apparently the latest reports from IPCC and NASA say that temps have not risen since 1998.
Still, it's a good excuse to tax us more in't it? - including (and it doesn't affect me 'cos I never go to London) charging "gas-guzzlers " more "congestion charge" Now - is it a congestion charge or a "gas-guzzler" charge or a charge on an easy target to raise more money???

wonder how many "green" stealth taxes have been introduced in correlation with the temperature increases? Thats a pretty irrational statement but it aint too far from the truth.

The wool is still coming down over some peoples eyes. The eternal question: what will happen to our economy when the oil runs out.

Our greedy government has not done anything during its accelerated period of economical growth to protect the environment. Its a society run by endless consumption ignoring all the warning signs. The people are being fooled into paying for green privileges when their are alteria motives.

.... IMO

Typical woolly Lib Dem thinking. They don't go far enough - we need to ban roads altogether.

Anyway I've hatched a cunning plan which I'm prepared to share with the BR on strict condition that we don't tell anyone else....quietly slip into your local dealer round about December 1st 2039 and place an order for a diesel.

Brilliant.

I've always been a LibDem voter mainly because I could never bring myself to vote Conservative or Labour! Also we have a LibDem MP who has been quite good.

But banning petrol cars by 2040? Irrelevant, as diesel engines will have rendered petrol ones obsolete by then anyway. In the late 1920's virtually all heavy commercial lorries and large buses had petrol engines but by 1950 the switch to diesel was almost complete. By the mid 60's mid weight trucks and buses were mostly diesel, by 1990 most vans were too. Now the trend is the same with cars (including Le Mans winners for the las two years!).

A lot of these diesels will probably be hybrids and I would guess there will be more pure battery electric short-range runabout cars and vans too.

The thing is that oil will be in shorter supply by then, as the known reserves will be dwindling while the demand around the world will be increasing. Biodiesel will be able to make up some but not all of the shortfall. My guess is that vehicle use will probably be much reduced simply because there won't be the means to run them.

What about all the oil in Khazakstan? Yes, but will it come our way or will it be sold to China or India?
What about the huge oil reserves thought to be under the South Atlantic around the Falklands?
Well, if they're there, good news except the sea is between 1 and 2 km deep in much of the prospecting area.

The LibDems have to come up with these impractical suggestions to keep one step ahead of those made by David Cameron!!!

To my mind either there isn't an environmental crisis in which case we don't need to do anything , or there IS one, in which case we need to consider serious proposals to ration the fuel supply and the limit types of vehicles used on the roads.

Call to ban petrol cars by 2040 - madf
in all seriosness, there is no need to ban anything.
And if the political parties did their homework.. and looked at the Peak Oil arguments.

Fact: demand is growing 3% pa.. worldwide for oil
Fact: Reserves could easily be exploited more : but the key ones are OPEC.. mainly Iraq, Iran and Saudi.
Fact: no major BIG fields found in 30 years...

Oil is now over $80... I recall posting 3 -4 years ago on oil prices and being told they would go back from the then $50 to $30...

And if the US bombs Iran - a 50% probability in the next 12 months - see $150 per barrel.

Petrol cars will not become obsolete but BIG petrol cars will... naturally.

Far better to talk about plans to grow more grain (world shortages on the way)...but who expects politicians to know what they are talking about?

But banning petrol cars by 2040? Irrelevant as diesel engines will have rendered petrol ones
obsolete by then anyway.

Diesels are more polluting than petrol ones, and what would you do with all the petrol if everyone went diesel-only?

The LibDems have been silly with this one -- all fossil fuel burning motors will have to go eventually. By 2040 the cost of crude is likely to render both types uneconomical in any case.
A lot of these diesels will probably be hybrids

Nah. The hybrid is a waste of time. All it does is (slightly) increase efficiency -- that can equally well be achieved by simply making the standard engine more efficient in the first place. Looking at the petrol hybrids, they are managing 60mpg against 50mpg for the best standard 1.6 equivalents; it really isn't worth bothering with.
Biodiesel will be able to make up some but not all of the shortfall.

Biodiesel (based on palm oil) has been shown to be more polluting than standard diesel due to the transportation cost. The cost of wheat (used to make Ethanol) is rising to the point that poor countries can no longer afford to buy it in for food. The only way plants will be useable for fuel is a drastic reduction in the world's population -- there simply isn't enough good land to serve our need for food *and* transport at current levels.
My guess is
that vehicle use will probably be much reduced simply because there won't be the means
to run them.

Well if we don't find any good alternatives by the time oil becomes uneconomical (which to be honest may not happen until 2100 or later) then that is the better of the two options -- the other doesn't even bear thinking about.
What about the huge oil reserves thought to be under the South Atlantic around the
Falklands?

There's your next world war ;) Forget the Mid-East, they'll chop each other up rightly enough -- fighting Argentina over oil is potential dynamite.

I think it's diesel that will be phased out. The future is small but powerful petrol engines, e.g. the Clio 1.2 Turbo. More than adequate performance, decent economy etc.

Strange the electorate seems to favour younger leaders which seems to be of step with the ageing population. Maybe we need to be more like the Japanese where age and a few wrinkes combined with grey hair is seen as preferable. With age comes wisdom.

I don't agree. With time, a young fool simply becomes an old fool! There's no causal link between age and wisdom.

Not causal perhaps NC.

But were you (to take a random example) born with all the wisdom you carry now?

Anyway Ming's a whippersnapper. Early sixties I think. Barely conscious at the end of the war.

Fully agree, whatever clothes wisdom, it certainly isn't a nappy!

However, I cannot agree with the view that if someone is old that they must therefore be wise.
