Going to Yarmouth, IoW tomorrow, via Lymington I think. Will be heading down from M3, j3 (from Woking).
Leaving Woking at 5:30pm, what time could I expect to arrive? Any particular traffic hotspots ?
Would I be better advised to go via Portsmouth?

I would allow 90mins to Portsmouth and 2hrs to Lymington on a Friday evening.

Flunky, do you mean get the ferry to IoW from Portsmouth - I think that might be better as you'll avoid the Westbound M3/ M27/A31 section which is likely to be horrible at that time on a Friday. If you go from Portsmouth the M27 wont be 'too' bad going toward Pompey from the M3. Alternatively can you get to Farnham, then Alton and pick up the A32 down to Fareham on the M27 ?

Leaving Woking at 5.30 you will get to the M27 at about 6.30-7pm, can easily loose 30 minutes at Eastleigh/Twyford cutting, once on the M27 should be about 30 minutes to Lymington, so would be there at 7.30 or 2 hours. To be on the safe side I would say 8pm at the very latest - not the best journey to make on a Friday night!!!!! But at least you can relax with a drink for 30 minutes on the crossing.

well i've booked the 7:15 ferry, seems if I miss it they will let me on the next one....
perhaps will leave a bit earlier.

thanks.
maybe i picked the wrong ferry to catch, don't like the sound of this:
> M3 to M27 is always a horror on Friday after 3 ish (tis my route home every weekday), all the smoke lot coming down to their holi homes for the weekend, also Sunday afternoon/evenings doing the reverse. Saturdays on a bank hol, also often bad.
>There are plenty of ways of gettin to the forest avoiding Lyndhurst though, try M27 Jct 2, down the A326 to Applemore roundabout (6-7 miles) and turn right, bingo, the forest.
Which of these would be best?
M27 j1, A337 -> Lymington (73.6 miles, 13 miles of which after on A337)
M27 j3, M271, A35 -> Lyndhurst, A337 -> Lymington (71.8 miles, 14 miles after M271 on A roads) (I note something on website saying "the recent signage trial on the M27 to direct Lyndhurst traffic via the Totton bypass, deemed by the highway authority to have been successful", so perhaps this is a good option)
M27 j2, A326, A35 -> Lyndhurst, A337 -> Lymington (74 miles, 16 miles after M27 on A roads)
or
in either of the last two, in lieu of Ashurst, Lyndhurst, Lymington, head instead via Marchwood bypass and then through Beaulieu, either straight down at Marchwood (Twiggs Road) or via B2054 Beaulieu Road from Hythe. Adds 2/3miles to journey, via Is this a poor idea?

If you go via Portsmouth you can go A320 then A3 all the way: Hindhead should be the only problem, the rest of it being quite a fast road. If I were you I'd still leave at least 2 hours though.
|
If itis any help I generally leave work ( M3 J4a) at 3 p.m. on a Friday, and I get home (SW corner of New Forest) about 4:20, via M3/M27/A31 - unless there's been a big pile up somewhere.
If I was going to Lymington I'd leave the M27 at J2 and head down the Totton bypass to dibden purlieu, turn right & head into Bealieu, then far end of Bealieu turn left down to lymington.
I'd still allow 2 hours like others have said, but hopefully the M27 west won't be so bad now the school holidays are over.

As the Lymington Ferry turning is off the Beaulieu to Lymington Road, the Beaulieu is the better route across the Forest, as suggested by SpamCan.

Too late now for the Original Poster but for future reference agree that the A326 , turn right at Dibden Purlieu and onto Beaulieu is the best option to get to Lymington from the M27 (Jct 2).
I reckon he is in for a journey though, at 3pm ish it was chocker due to the boat show in Southampton, the smoke crowd at m3/m27 Jct and gettin off the M27 at Jct 3 made it manic. Fingers crossed though.
Trust me, I know this dam root to well.
Cheers

That's the route I took, and it was a good one.
M3 was choc-a-bloc most of the way, except for just after the second Basingstoke exit - several random 'slow to almost nothing and then just as suddenly go back to normal speed'-type delays. Was probably delayed by 15 minutes+ compared to a clear road here.
M3 looked busy from j2 to j1, was less busy I think on M271.
Going down to Dibden Purlieu was ok, but a couple of petrol tankers ahead kept speeds down a bit.
Once I turned off onto Beaulieu road however, no traffic, just nice empty New Forest road, so it was a good route.
Left 5:20 arrived about 6:57.
Ferry is small and didn't dock until about 7:05, so no problems with slightly late arrival, it's not too formal.

Thanks for the route advice from all and the feedback from flunky.
I will log these routes for future use.
