When I picked up my Corsa SRi today, the LCD display above the centre air vents wasnt working.
I removed it and it kept flickering but was hard to keep it on. Anyway, I managed to refit it with it still displaying, but the temp readings are wild - went from 22c to -9c. The display is also duller at the lefthand end than the right - why is this?
Also, is there any way of making the connection more secure? The plug is in well enough but its still sensitive to being tapped even so not sure how long before it stops working again.

Not sure which model you have but most are illuminted by two W3W bulbs, and replacing these cures the backlighting problem. Later ones used LEDs, but these don't have the problems either.
The temperature sender is a common fault. It is mounted on the back of the bumper and cost about £5.

Its a 1994 SRi Corsa.
I will replace the bulbs. That wont solve the poor connection though - it keeps loosing its connection, then resetting back to 1992! The plug is so loose at the back but there doesnt seem any obvious way of securing it. This is a bigger problem than the poor lighting ( although by no means the only problem! ).
Whereabouts on the back bumper is the sender unit?

The temperature sensor is on the front bumper, normally behind and just below the front numberplate. Earlier Vauxhalls had them situated on the nearside corner of the front bumper, on the underside lip, near to the front wheel. Yours could be in either location.

You might like to read the article on the Astra display here called "Change the Orange Diffuser on the MFD" at www.astraownersclub.com/vb/showthread.php?t=96753 I can't imagine they are that different in design.
Also will suitably placed small plastic cable ties hold the connector on any tighter?

Had a similar problem with mine. Ended up resoldering the joints where the plug goes in. Need good eyesight and a really small soldering iron! Do that before you replace the outside temperature sensor. My readings were up and down until I resoldered the connections - fine after that.
I did replace the temperature sensor a few years back (unrelated to the joints problem) because it was obvious that the sensor itself had packed up. Got a replacement cheaply off eBay. No dismantling required. The sensor is situated near the bottom of the radiator, behind the bumper, and can be got at if you have slim arms, hands and fingers.
