were all chomping at the bit lets be honest, there aint been a lot on the telly as regards good humoured car related banter, at least TG isnt full of has beens like plato and tiff.. and its got that feel good factor like you can watch it with a beer in hand from your armchair, without getting pulled to blow into a bag (unless your misses has just rolled in from the chippy and the chips are hot) amongst other blow-able items

I'VE GOT TICKETS TO TOP GEAR!!!!!
Say what you like about the motoring content, and how it ain't as got as the old days, or whatever, etc. but I'm really looking to seeing the show being made, the out-takes, etc. It's taken ages to get the tickets, which shows how popular the show must be.
I'm going on 24/10, presumably for broadcasting on 28/10?

I'VE GOT TICKETS TO TOP GEAR!!!!!
Can you make a secret sign so we know it's you? ;)
Actually, loathe as I am to admit, after several months of cold turkey relieved only by the methadone of FG, getting back to TopGear(!) might alleviate the increasingly cold sweats induced by Tiff, Plato & VBH.

Perhaps boxsterboy and his companions could all dress in white t-shirts and trilbys - a very fashionable look, so I'm told !
|
|
Good idea! Now, where can I borrow a trilby from??
|
|
....tonight. All discussion in here, otherwise it'll get moved here (and might get lost in the process) HJ's rules apply.

Gonna watch it later, but I did catch a brief glimpse of Hamster whilst channel surfing just now. I see he's going to the same hair dresser that James May uses.
|
|
I had exactly the same thought.
|
|
I've watched every series of Top Gear and if I watch a show always do from the start to the end. With todays I stopped watching after 20 minutes, just boring, once you've seen one 911 you've seen them all.
|
|
Same here - dogs had an unexpected walk at minute 23.
|
Well, I enjoyed it. One hour of light hearted and vaguely car related entertainment on a Sunday night.
I'm sure 50% of the audience watch simply to get themselves all annoyed about it, but with the dross (i.e endless soaps and reality shows) on TV these days I like to see three blokes who really look like they enjoy their job.
And theres 10 episodes in this series - takes us nicely up until Christmas!

What was all the reference to Fifth Gear about? Had guests in so volume was too low to hear!!

They had a fire in the warehouse, which is why they have new furniture and the Coolwall has been destroyed. The fire brigade suspect arson, and JC reckons it must have been someone from Fifth Gear.
|
Dull...
Race around foreign climes for some spurious reason in supercars that look much like the other Porsches, Lambos and Aston Martins they've done it in before...
Anger the locals, much as they've done before several times now...
Seriously formulaic.
I had hoped they'd have done something halfway interesting for the opener.
|
i thought the micheal palin programme was far more interesting and probably cheaper to make
lets hope next week is better :-(
|
I was thinking Michael Palin was spreading himself a bit thin bb.
Naturally the TG people have been doing it for years.
That's modern TV though - thin fare, if you can call it fare at all.
I am looking forward to the Sopranos myself. Thickest of a thin bunch.... :o)
|
missed series 2 sopranos and never got back on board, refuse to pay extortianate dvd prices to catch up so will wait till 2027 for the repeats on intergalactic mainstream if i live that long :-(
thing with palin at least he scratches things rather than glosses
tg? things can only get better.........i hope?

Well I thought the photography on their trip to find a decent road was absolutely stunning. Real high quality, gorgeous filming, lovely deep rich colours (or was that just my telly?), great angles. Yes, the naration was predictable to the last word - it's a shame you couldn't turn the talking down without losing the engine soundtrack.
The story really inspired me want to drive out there next summer and repeat the exercise. Reminded me of a week late last summer when me and the Mrs hired an SLK and drove round The Black Forest. Lovely empty roads and barely a tourist, let alone a Brit, in sight.
|
The view down that valley with the empty road was just gorgeous, reminds me of deepest wales on a midweek drive ,east of hadawristwatch ,have you been there? truly gorgeous if its not raining.

I thought James May looked decidedly non-plussed when JC was spouting forth in the airchair/news part of the programme. I think he would well to leave the programme and let JC make a bigger idiot of himself.
|
|
Great episode, welcome back TG. I loved the colour of that Porsche, really suited the car IMO, shame May's car was off the pace though.

Did anyone else notice that James' car was an 04-reg, whilst the other two were 07?

I found it dull and boring, apart from one good laugh from May during the 'news'. The show was three middle aged men behaving like little school boys and expecting others to share the in jokes and juvenile humour. I think there is a reason the show goes out before the 9pm watershed, otherwise the key audience would be in bed.
Clarkson is becoming a parody of himself, with Hammond not far behind. I've noticed Clarson's Sunday Times columns are becoming more predictable, less funny, if humorous at all, to the point where they are little more than eccentric right wing polemics.
|
I don't get these driving fast through some winding roads bit. Some of what was acted out (acting being the right word) was slightly amusing but only in a Last of the Summer Wine kind of way.
Driving on those roads in say a new Mondeo TDCi would have probably been as quick. Even that could have broken speed limits.
Boring.

I really enjoyed it, and what's more, it's the only thing I've ever seen or heard that's inspired me to seriously contemplate visiting the Alps.
Yes, it's brain candy, and yes, there's stuff on the kids channels that's more intellectually stimulating, but it's been the same way for years, and it's making the BBC a fortune globally. They'd be mad to even consider changing it.
Excellent, thoroughly mindless entertainment in preparation for a return to seriousness on Monday mornings. It's never going to morph into a wheeled equivalent of Mastermind - accept it and either enjoy it for what it is, or don't watch it.

DP,
Go and do it! We drove the exact route they chose as "best" in July this year in an MR2. After this country (at best a couple of miles of "driving road" then cameras etc.) it is absolutely stunning, with fantastic roads and little traffic. In my experience, the Swiss Police are only concerned about selling you the Autobahn Vignette at the border control. Yes, you actually get stopped at the border! Now that`s a novelty these days.
The Stelvio is incredible, but is not a great driving experience because it is so popular - you almost need to stop at each turn as the visibility is very poor due to the concrete blocks lining the road and there is lots of traffic. And the cyclists pass you on both sides and don`t slow down for the corners - MAD!
The surrounding roads and passes are much nicer `drives` and can be really enjoyed.
