Anyway, on the strictly related issue - when's the new TG starting so I can have a good old whinge about how carp it is?

SNIPQUOTE once again!

You are talking about Top Gear, the comedy hour and not Top Gear, the motoring programme that used to be on TV some years ago?

It should be renamed 'JC and his three stooges'.

Well then, JC and the tens of millions of stooges. Is much better than the dull old TG, because it's actually a bit of fun!
Top Gear back in October - Aretas
I think we should all watch TG as an entertainment programme. And it is entertaining. If there is a bit of motoring to which we can relate to, then all the better. If not, then enjoy it for what it is.

Unfortunately, like all comedy shows, the script writers/ideas people will eventually run out of new ideas.

were all chomping at the bit lets be honest, there aint been a lot on the telly as regards good humoured car related banter, at least TG isnt full of has beens like plato and tiff.. and its got that feel good factor like you can watch it with a beer in hand from your armchair, without getting pulled to blow into a bag (unless your misses has just rolled in from the chippy and the chips are hot) amongst other blow-able items

I'VE GOT TICKETS TO TOP GEAR!!!!!

Say what you like about the motoring content, and how it ain't as got as the old days, or whatever, etc. but I'm really looking to seeing the show being made, the out-takes, etc. It's taken ages to get the tickets, which shows how popular the show must be.

I'm going on 24/10, presumably for broadcasting on 28/10?

Can you make a secret sign so we know it's you? ;)

Actually, loathe as I am to admit, after several months of cold turkey relieved only by the methadone of FG, getting back to TopGear(!) might alleviate the increasingly cold sweats induced by Tiff, Plato & VBH.

Gonna watch it later, but I did catch a brief glimpse of Hamster whilst channel surfing just now. I see he's going to the same hair dresser that James May uses.

I had exactly the same thought.
TOP GEAR is back - carl_a
I've watched every series of Top Gear and if I watch a show always do from the start to the end. With todays I stopped watching after 20 minutes, just boring, once you've seen one 911 you've seen them all.

Well, I enjoyed it. One hour of light hearted and vaguely car related entertainment on a Sunday night.

I'm sure 50% of the audience watch simply to get themselves all annoyed about it, but with the dross (i.e endless soaps and reality shows) on TV these days I like to see three blokes who really look like they enjoy their job.

And theres 10 episodes in this series - takes us nicely up until Christmas!

Dull...

Race around foreign climes for some spurious reason in supercars that look much like the other Porsches, Lambos and Aston Martins they've done it in before...

Anger the locals, much as they've done before several times now...

Seriously formulaic.

I had hoped they'd have done something halfway interesting for the opener.

I was thinking Michael Palin was spreading himself a bit thin bb.

Naturally the TG people have been doing it for years.

That's modern TV though - thin fare, if you can call it fare at all.

Well I thought the photography on their trip to find a decent road was absolutely stunning. Real high quality, gorgeous filming, lovely deep rich colours (or was that just my telly?), great angles. Yes, the naration was predictable to the last word - it's a shame you couldn't turn the talking down without losing the engine soundtrack.

The story really inspired me want to drive out there next summer and repeat the exercise. Reminded me of a week late last summer when me and the Mrs hired an SLK and drove round The Black Forest. Lovely empty roads and barely a tourist, let alone a Brit, in sight.
TOP GEAR is back - bell boy
The view down that valley with the empty road was just gorgeous, reminds me of deepest wales on a midweek drive ,east of hadawristwatch ,have you been there? truly gorgeous if its not raining.

I thought James May looked decidedly non-plussed when JC was spouting forth in the airchair/news part of the programme. I think he would well to leave the programme and let JC make a bigger idiot of himself.

I found it dull and boring, apart from one good laugh from May during the 'news'. The show was three middle aged men behaving like little school boys and expecting others to share the in jokes and juvenile humour. I think there is a reason the show goes out before the 9pm watershed, otherwise the key audience would be in bed.

Clarkson is becoming a parody of himself, with Hammond not far behind. I've noticed Clarson's Sunday Times columns are becoming more predictable, less funny, if humorous at all, to the point where they are little more than eccentric right wing polemics.
TOP GEAR is back - rtj70
I don't get these driving fast through some winding roads bit. Some of what was acted out (acting being the right word) was slightly amusing but only in a Last of the Summer Wine kind of way.

Driving on those roads in say a new Mondeo TDCi would have probably been as quick. Even that could have broken speed limits.

Boring.
TOP GEAR is back - DP
I really enjoyed it, and what's more, it's the only thing I've ever seen or heard that's inspired me to seriously contemplate visiting the Alps.

Yes, it's brain candy, and yes, there's stuff on the kids channels that's more intellectually stimulating, but it's been the same way for years, and it's making the BBC a fortune globally. They'd be mad to even consider changing it.

Excellent, thoroughly mindless entertainment in preparation for a return to seriousness on Monday mornings. It's never going to morph into a wheeled equivalent of Mastermind - accept it and either enjoy it for what it is, or don't watch it.

DP,
Go and do it! We drove the exact route they chose as "best" in July this year in an MR2. After this country (at best a couple of miles of "driving road" then cameras etc.) it is absolutely stunning, with fantastic roads and little traffic. In my experience, the Swiss Police are only concerned about selling you the Autobahn Vignette at the border control. Yes, you actually get stopped at the border! Now that`s a novelty these days.
The Stelvio is incredible, but is not a great driving experience because it is so popular - you almost need to stop at each turn as the visibility is very poor due to the concrete blocks lining the road and there is lots of traffic. And the cyclists pass you on both sides and don`t slow down for the corners - MAD!
The surrounding roads and passes are much nicer `drives` and can be really enjoyed.

Hmmm, that good, eh?

Personally I can't stand Jools Holland. Neither can I stand the celebrity in a crap car item. Another cheap dig at 5th Gear. Also thought Jezza's comments toward Plato were a bit too harsh. The rest of it had some funny moments. Schoolboy banter during the news items. More "Last of The Summer Wine" capers during the amphibious challenge.

Wonder what the anti smoking brigade will say about them smoking indoors? Due to the unique way in which the BBC licence is funded, I guess it will be down to us to pay any fines ;o(
Top Gear - 14/10/2007 - MartinB
Well, I thought it was the funniest programme I have seen in ages!

Especially when Clarkson got a mouthful of burning tobacco (putting the pipe bowl in his mouth, making fun of the fact that a Porsche has the engine in the back) !!!!

Yes, I know some of it follows a tried and tested formula and I too could do without the Celebrity bit, but its so refreshing to see Clarkson et al obviously having a great time, stretching the boundaries, making fun of 5th Gear etc. etc.

Take it all with a pinch of salt and just enjoy the fun.

And they made it across the channel in a 'Toyboata' !!

I'm just sad that the media have to refer to Top Gear as for 'speed freaks' and 'petrol heads'. Surely it's just great entertainment that appeals to a far wider audience.

Top Gear - 14/10/2007 - blue_haddock
Well i haven't laughed as much at a TV programme in ages as i did tonight at topgear - the porker pipes bit was hilarious!

I think the problem with topgear is that some of the more mature viewers remember top gear from when men with beards would review the new proton and give an accurate assesment of how good it is and then give you tips on improving MPG by keeping your tyres properly inflated etc. The current top gear is merely a lighthearted entertainment programme on the theme of motoring..

anyway i enjoy it so i'm not fussed about what the rest of you think!
Top Gear - 14/10/2007 - daveyjp
Jools Holland did well this weekend. Jonathan Ross on Friday telling the Ramones story and plugging his CD, same gig in Top Gear two days later - left me some time to watch a bit of the rugby!

Jools Holland has more talent in his little fingers than the oaf Clarkson has in his entire body. JIMHO, of course...
Top Gear - 14/10/2007 - BobbyG
What summed up TG for me was that I had recorded it and won the battle over the G family to watch it instead of X factor and some other carp.

The 4 of us laughed heartily throughout it, esp my wife and 13 year old daughter who obviously hadn't watched it before and knew how the jokes and challenges would go.

As been said before, its an entertainment programme loosely based around motoring.

I gave up taking it as a serious motoring programme quite some time ago. found it quite amusing last night - usually I find their pranks rather silly and I don't bother watching, but I did find the cross channel lark funny.

But have to agree with HJ. Making fun at "baked potato" was not that great. Also when you knock a competitor (ie 5th Gear) it just makes you look tacky. Much better to jsut ignore them or do in a much more subtle way.
Top Gear - 14/10/2007 - J Bonington Jagworth
"I did find the cross channel lark funny"

I seem to be in a minority here, but playing silly b's in Dover harbour probably isn't very bright - the occupants of the police RIB didn't seem too amused. Not a very good example, crossing the world's busiest shipping lane without* lifejackets, either...

*I don't remember seeing them, at least. It was on for my 9-year old's benefit, as he likes a bit of relief from the intellectual rigor of CBBC.

Top Gear - 14/10/2007 - Round The Bend
Channel crossing stuff was funny although totally removed from motoring other than the drive to Dover. Suspect the authorities were fully aware of the TG filming and the Sea Cat was nowhere near our nautical heroes.

On a separate note - all 911s look the same to me, so the sight of the Hamster driving yet another one was somewhat underwhelming.

The Dover harbour shots seemed to have been done in a quiet area; as for the Sea Cat, using a telephoto/zoom lens would make it appear very much closer with our intrepid adventurers in the forefront than in reality.

I would be surprised if such stunts were undertaken without the full knowledge of the harbour authorities and Coastguard; I would suspect that the vehicles were taken across the Channel for the filming on the other side.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, despite the rather slow buildup.

Better than the previous week, but still an awful lot of reasons to yawn. It is very Enid Blyton.

The cross channel crossing was impressive in that they did it. But it struck me as very dangerous. Had the Toyota rolled at the end, would they have survived, given the shallowness of the water?

Well, for those who can't wait, this Sundays 'Star In A Reasonably Priced Car' will be ... Ronnie Wood (Rolling Stones).

There was a fabulous range of cars in the hanger during yesterday's filming - Veyron, Rolls Drop Head, Lambo Reventon and Ferrari 612. All are featured in this Sunday's show (editing permitting), but the best item is one on a VERY small car. The film was hilarious.

Clarkson was the same, whether the camera was running or not (like him or hate him), but the other two were extremely subdued - I got the feeling they are getting fed up as being JCs side-kicks.

There is also a 'Special' in a couple of weeks when they drive across Botswana in cheap 2wd cars, proving 4x4s really are not necessary. We only saw 8 minutes of it, but it looks good.

Simon Cowell was also back on doing another fast lap in the car - can't stand him myself!

Whatever May & Hammond may think of Clarkson (positive or negative) without him Top Gear would never have returned in this format and May would be an obscure motoring journalist writing for Car/Autocar/Autodistress or whatever and Hammon on local radio and the odd feature on UK Bums n' Tits.

Clarkson was the first person to ever go from motoring journalism to mainstream household name and he did that before either of the other two.
Top Gear - 29th Oct - Screwloose

Nobody's telling me that JC was running an old two-stroke engine indoors - he was being pushed by the crew.

It was noticable that there was no smoke visible - a big difference to the on-road shots.
Top Gear - 29th Oct - Stuartli
I first came across Hammond a number of years ago on Men and Motors in the ON/ITVDigital days. His presentation was flat and generally uninspirng.

Clarkson, in my view at least, is just the sort you'd want to talk to in your local pub - opinionated, animated and giving not a fig leaf for convention or political correctness.

He also has that rare ability to convey humour in the written form.

Big C's personality is usually a surreal combination of Basil Faulty and Norman Tebbit so I found it refreshing that last night he decided to make a bit of a departure from the grumpy-old-fascist routine and decided to come over all Mr Bean.
I'm not sure how Mr Bean felt about this but I don't imagine he was too happy.

I agree that the programme would be much the poorer without the tonsured monk but I disagree with the disparaging remarks about the Hampster and James May. I find them both to be much more endearing than Britain?s answer to Rush Limbaugh and if the big galoot weren't so overbearing every time he is in their presence then I'm sure they would have a lot more to offer.

Top Gear - 29th Oct - Lud

I noticed that too. I reckon he did it deliberately, by flinging his weight about inside the car at the right moment. HJ says it was brave of him to do it... mischievous more like.

I must say the very pronounced negative camber - do I mean camber? I think there may be another word - on the front wheels is a bit of an aesthetic disaster, although obviously needed.
Top Gear - 29th Oct - Chad.R
And the Lambo Revempton's wheels designed to suck air to engine was a novelty.

I don't think they were designed to suck air to the engine - rather to cool the brake disks. Similar designs have been around for a while, notably the BMW (E34) M5 with the windmill alloys.

Really enjoyed last night's show - the Peel "sketch" had me and SWMBO in stitches...... And finally, love him or hate him, I doubt TG would be the worldwide hit that it is without JC.
Top Gear - 29th Oct - boxsterboy
but the best item is one on a VERY small car. The film

See? I said it was going to be good!

We were there for 5 hours. Surprisingly few re-takes, and what there were were mostly for technical reasons, rather than fluffing the lines. The interview with Ronnie Wood, and the news bits went on far longer, but they edited out a lot. Seeing those cars in the flesh was worth every minute. The Lexus not-so-parallel parking bit was from another week (that's why the presenter's clothes changed!).

The owner of the Peel and the 'Jetsons' car was there, as was a man from Bugatti, keeping a nervous eye on the Veyron. He didn't like me asking questions like 'What's going to happen to Bugatti now that Porsche have bought VW?'
Top Gear - 29th Oct - stunorthants26
Havent laughed so hard in ages, even my mum was in sticthes and shes no car lover.
The Peel section was a classic and one of the best items in the last few years, now all we need is for the three of them to be given £2000 to go and buy a microcar and drive the length of Britain or something horrific like that.

As far as JC goes, he makes the programme, he is to the motoring world what Simon Cowell is to music - I enjoy his written word just as much as his TV work.
However, credit where due, Hamster and May are now also integral parts of the show and without them, it would be missing something.
As they say, a winning formula and long may it continue.
Top Gear - 29th Oct - Shaz {p}
Thought the comment on the Peel having to pay a congestion charge and the Lexus 4x4 getting not was funny, - with the big cloud of ble smoke coming out the back of the Peel.

The sports version was funny (even more Jetsons then the normal one).

04 Alfa Romeo 156 SW JTD 20v - Loving it.
Top Gear - 29th Oct - DP
When the Peel trundled along behind the glass screen on BBC News 24, I lost all remnants of composure and just howled with laughter. Likewise when Dermot Murnaghan walked up to it waiting at the lights, spun it around, and ran off laughing. I love this programme. It's pure entertainment.
I can think of very few people who would be more entertaining to have a few beers with than Clarkson. I find May's role a little sad this season. He seems to be little more than an object of fun for the other two rather than amusing in his own right as he has been in previous seasons. I thought his Taste the Difference cheese analogy last week was spot on, but the other two weren't listening.
That said, it wouldn't be the same if any of them left.

Cheers

I can't think why people try to discriminate between the presenters. The chemistry works, or seems to. They are all personable in their different ways.

But what was the business with Clarkson's watch and James May leaving in a huff? Did anyone understand what it was about? I certainly didn't and James May looked genuinely annoyed, although of course the chances are it was all rehearsed and planned. But what was it about?

About JM's supposed OCD (true or not?) - JC has a fancy watch with bezels(s) for various functions (time zones etc) - the 'joke' is that JM finds it distressing if the bezel isn't lined-up 'correctly' , much the same as the compulsion not to walk on pavement cracks etc.

The 'funny' bits, as usual, have about as much humourous tension as a Christmas cracker joke - even slapstick can have a bit of sophistication. The Euro-fighter/Veyron contest showed a little more promise - concise & dramatic. The Peel car gag flogged to death after initial promise - why don't they get a good editor? I feel the prgramme is over-long & could be edited to about 40mins to give better impact for the fairly thin material.
