The handbook says:
10W-30 is preferable for temperatures above -20C.
5W-30 will positively improve economy.

No-one seems to do a 10W-30.
Comma recommend 5W-30.
Castrol recommend 0W-30 (edge), or 10W-40 (Magnatec)

I'm probably being super fussy, but what would you do? It's that word preferable that's bothering me.

Ask your local dealer what they use. Just to confuse you further they'll probably use something totally different!

My thoughts would be:
On the face of it, the thinner the better when starting (so 0W) and thicker the better when hot, but some cars are fussy about this and economy might be impacted (hard to imagine by much though) so stick with the 30.

In practice I wouln't have any qualms about using any 0/5/10W or 30/40 at the other end.

stay away from the large retailers and support your local factor because once they get eaten up by the big boys the prices WILL go up

Always use a 10W40 semi-synth in these engines. 5 litres from a local factor = £10+VAT (maybe more depending where in the UK you are). Castrol website tells everyone to use fully synth 0w30, even though your engine wasn't developed with that in mind.

GS. I was thinking along the lines of using 10W-40. My local factor sells Comma which I've used for years.

BB. You're pushing against an open door on motor factors. I run up the flagpole about supporting then a while back. I'm glad to see we're singing from the same hymn sheet, but it's good to stand it up to see who salutes it.
I think I need to go and lay down.

Re good motor factors.
Our excellent motor factor here in Sunderland is marred by the fact that it has a fairly central position within the city and as a result there is no legal parking anywhere nearby.
God bless our wise city fathers.
Oh, and if I cycle there the over-large buses almost knock me off!

I remember cycling the the motor factors with a starter motor on the carrier.
I vowed to take the bus next time - I'm sure they used to be lighter than that.

Only a starter motor-I remember carrying a battery(6v. of course) to get it charged.
