A garage local to me is selling a Qx. Its the 3ltr SEL Auto on an N plate.
Has anyone any experience of the big Nissan?
Anything in particular i should look for please? Its done 102k but is in mint condition with all the toys working. Its up at £1000.
I took it out for a spin yesterday and its the most comfortable car i've driven. What kind of mpg should i expect? It would be used for my commute from Mansfield to Burton on Trent( only twice a week-i work away from home)
Thanks for any help.
jon

sounds alright to me
if you are concerned about the mpg i wouldnt buy a 3 litre auto, big cars big engines and auto boxes are never going to be fuel efficient but who cares when you can waft along with power and grace
make sure the air con works by the way
downside? dammed ugly brutes but you dont see that when your sat in it
competition for a mota like this for a grand?=.............non

I have been driving QX Man's 98 2L QX since 03/05/07 so will second that comment. Sun blinds are a bit hard to pull down tho. May invest in a baseball cap:-))

Getting 27/28mpg

Valhalla, with luck Aprilia will be along in a bit to tell you about his (positive) experiences in one. He´s one of the most respected posters on this forum.

I've had a Maxima QX 3.0 for three months now and it's fabulous. I have the facelifted A33 version. a 2001 car. Since buying mine I've done 3,500 miles and nothing has gone wrong . typical old style Nissan. Regarding fuel consumption, over the last thousand miles I've averaged 32 mpg however I only use it for the longer journeys , I use my wife's hatchback for shorter journeys. The way to drive this car is to be laid back, it just glides along serenely. I did cane it once thorougly and the computer ( which is 100% accurate re fuel consumption brim to brim ) gave me a reading of 23 mpg. I suspect if you used it for commuting in rush hour you'd only get 20 ish mpg. I was relunctant initially to get a 3.0 model fearing the cost of petrol but am thrilled with the performance and economy of this car.
Re this 1996 model you're considering do make sure it needs near perfect because the A33 models are affordable and great value. I paid £3,500 for my 3.0 SE plus with 64k and a FSH by Nissan. Every now and again these cars crop up on ebay and languish unsold.

Thanks john. I`ve looked at a few big omega`s and a few mondeo 2.5`s but i`m leaning towards getting the qx next week.
from what i`ve read on various review sites its a cracking engine as long as the oil`s done regularly
I`m normally travelling in to work early on a monday morning- between 0300 and 0500, so the traffic`s light.
It will be nice to just get into a big auto and waft down the a38 with the cruise on!
Has aprillia got a qx barchettaman?

Yeah he has got one (unless he's sold it, think it's a 3.0 litre) along with a Skyline so he likes the brand!

There was another chap on this site who had one who sold it to another poster so maybe they'll also be along at some point. As you say, make sure its had regular oil changes (because of the chain-cam) and it should be a good car to live with.

Really? All the reviews i`ve read have said there bullet proof?
I`m not expecting the world (its only a grand!) but a few years worth of 2x 40mile trips per week in big comfort should be attainable without throwing money at it?
Or not?

BUY IT!

Think of it as a cheap Lexus!!

Bit like buying a Mazda Xedos, instead of wasting 3 times as much, on a worn out 3 Series BMW!

I has a Nissan QX for about four years and sold it to Phil I, as he mentions further up this thread.
It was probably the best car I have owned, and the cheapest to run. It never missed a beat. I had it serviced regularly and used synthetic oil and genuine Nissan parts, apart from the brake pads which were Mintex, a good brand.
When I sold the car it was 8-9 years old and had no creaks or rattles and everything worked. The engine was beautifully smooth and quiet, and the whole car really did feel as good as new.
The Maxima-QX has been Nissan's best selling car in the US for many years and its easy to understand why. Everything just works.

report needed now purchased as a private purchaser warts and all, it would be interesting to have the tale of doornocking viewing dealing and then driving away

I did the deal today. It was on the part exchange pitch of my local subaru dealer, and had caught my eye as i walked home with the kids from town last weekend.
I put my r reg 1.8 lx escort estate in as a part chop. It will make someone a decent work car but just not my cup of tea.
So i went and saw the salesman who i must say was very friendly and not at all as dealers are sometimes portrayed.
The body has a few small scratches but the inside is as new! the black leather heated electric seats are really comfy.
All the toys work- a/c, cruise etc.
Its got a good service history with the last one at 100k.
I gave it a good footfull on the way home and the v6 makes a lovely snarling sound when provoked.
So summing up i hope i`ve got a big comfy car to see me through the winter cruising up and down the a38 to work.
Thanks for the helpful info.

If they kept it on the forecourt rather than auction it it's probably a sound motor. Enjoy it, you can't beat a six cylinder engine either straight or V.

thanks for the update valhalla ,glad you bought it, sounds a good one and a decent dealer ,get a service done on it before the winter get the antifreeze checked and i reckon you will be very happy for a long time to come.

well i`ve had "the barge" for quite a few weeks now and what a lovely old motor it is.
I do feel i`d be better towing a fuel bowser behind me but who cares ;)
Its extremely comfy, it can leave "sports cars" for dead between 60 and 80mph (not that i`d ever do such an outrageous speed...) or i can just cruise serenely letting the rat race pass me by..
Overall-- VERY thirsty but very solidly built, powerful(still, at 12years and 100k+) and as comfy as an old pair of slippers
Thanks to all who said buy

Congrats on a great purchase.

Why is everyone obsessed with "sport" in cars?

A car that's smooth, quiet and comfy (but with power if you need) is far preferrable to a noisy, twitchy go-cart.

>>>>>>>>> no offence peterb but i think that just shows your age.
I used to lower everything, take back seats, out in fact anything to make a car lighter and faster, these days i prefer leather with heaters and auto myself.

They have a very good reputation in Ukraine - common to see 12-15 year old models being sold for a good price (higher import duty keeps second prices high) and a recent used car review in the motoring press only criticised the cost of original spares and fuel consumption whilst comparing it favourably with the Toyota Camry.

" i think that just shows your age"

It's a fair point!

However it isn't just young blokes who buy "sport" models. Also, I can understand the low weight, stripped-down mentality in a sports car but I struggle with the idea of a 5-Series (say) having its ride ruined by sports suspension and rubber band tyres
Is this a bargain ? Any experiences ? - bell boy
Ive never ever liked rubber band tyres either and thats from me who in 1997 got his insurance terminated for fitting something like 145/70/12 onto my austin 1300 and my insurance company wrote to me to say i had made it into a sports car and my insurance was hereby cancelled, these tyres were cutting edge at the time for the youngunns who come on here

BB good to know that you informed the ins co of the change even though they took a dim view of it.

I wonder how many are running round on different wheel/tyre combo's and HAVENT told their ins cos?

I have a 1998 s reg nissan qx 3ltr which i got 8 months ago.Its the most comfortable car i have had, all the luxury of a top end car and more, but because they were not seen as prestige like mercs and lexus, they go cheap.I paid £1500 for mine with only 63000 miles gen on clock. book said it should have been about £2500. Its very smooth and engine quiet, plenty of power. They have a rep for being very reliable, but only if serviced every 9/10 thous miles.Make sure they do the timing chain tension(no belt). An american engine review says it has probably the best 3ltr v6 engine on the market.
downside I only average 22.9mpg around my rural area , but gather i could get up to 28 on the motorway.

The Nissan QX is one of the great bargains if you find a good one - enjoy it to the full...:-)

"I only average 22.9mpg "

Yeah, but...
You're enjoying it, it saved you a shed-load of money in the first place, and unless you're doing a huge mileage, the difference between that and what you might get with a buzz-box, say 7 or 8 mpg, is trivial compared to the cost of everything else. People get fixated by mpg, but it's only one of many factors.
