Garage/Dealer used car "warranty" - smokescreen
Hi,

I've just made a few calls for cars im looking into , and some of the places are offering a wararnty supplied by "APA Customer Protect" for non wear and tear faults on the car. Tried looking through the site and using google and co, nothing has come up.

My first thought on these used warranties is 'yeah , as if they'll cover anything!'. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with APA or such 3rd party warranties before? In particular, common rail issues.

Thanks in advance

Hello,

yes I have some experience of warrenties in general and that is stay away frm them, a garage once told me warrenty companies have a big door to let you in and an even bigger one to get you out ie not to pay you.

There are so many clauses to stop them from paying that you would tie your self up in knots. A good bit of advice is if it comes free with the car then take it but make sure it hasn't been loaded onto the screen price if it has ask for the proce without the warrenty. If it doesn't come free then stick the money that you would have spent on the warrenty in a high interest account and when your car breaks down use that money to pay for it.

Hope this makes sense cheers harry

I've just issued a summons for compensation against a main dealer garage whom I bought a 2 1/2 year old car with a top up 6 month warranty, so a total of one year. It was bought under an approved used car scheme. Supposed to be checked etc, it appears the lack of servicing invalidates the remainder of the manufactures warranty and the top up warranty. I got the service book, and Warranty details after I had paid for the car. Terms and Conditions clearly state full and proper service history, but the car has had inadequate servicing. They claim warranty will be still be intact but aren't willing to put anything in writing.

These used warranties are a pile of dogs dung. So many clauses that nothing is covered, and that's ones bought from a reputable main dealer and respected brand!

the only warranty I've ever had that was worth anything was the dealer's word. I bought a VW Caravelle 2nd hand from a dealer and on enquiring about a warranty he said he didn't do them but if I had any problems just bring it back. Well I had loads of problems and I took it back several times and the car had loads of work done to it - to no avail unfortunately, it was just a pile of doodoo. But the dealer and his mechanic tried hard and I think highly of him for it.
If you're in Fife and want a 4x4 I can put you in touch with a dealer you can trust.

Maybe things have improved, but many used car warranties in the past had limitations on 'consequential damage'. In other words, if the oil pump failed they'd cover the cost of a new pump - but not the rest of the damage caused when the engine siezed (naturally, you should have stopped the car the instant the pump failed, sir). Similarly, some would have quite severe limitations on how much would be paid out per claim, and in total. Others had strange ideas on what was 'fair wear and tear'.

That was some time ago - but I've never bothered with them, then or now.
