This model has an oil level sensor fitted, as well as an oil pressure switch, but the handbook contains no reference to oil LEVEL so does anyone know how/where this is displayed? or if not displayed what is it used for?

You don't say what vehicle but probably only a warning light when it's almost too late.
{He does, it's in the RH corner, but we still prefer people to add that info to the subject header, of which I have just done for the 100001'st time! - DD}

Oil level usuallly works by pressing a button and displaying on a guage normally used for something else (oil pressure?).

On Vauxhalls with Check Control, an oil level fault warning is displayed on the multi-function display but the handbook details all these messages.

On Many French cars, it flashes up as a series of bars on the dash computer display which disappear once car is running.

Yes, that is how it is in PSA cars - a 10 second display of level shown as a row of 'O's. Low level would be shown as OOOO-- for example, full would be OOOOOO

Now that Astra-G has been added for our information (thanks, mods) I'll reconfirm that details are in the Vauxhall Astra Owner's Manual, page 34 for the 2000 model year (page number may vary for other model years)

Astra G oil level sensor display?
Thanks everyone...will check the manual again more carfully, especially page 34, but don't think I missed it the first time.
On a 2001Audi A4, the indicator is amber for low oil level and red for low oil pressure.
regards
Brian

Now that Astra-G has been added for our information (thanks mods)
The car info is now displayed in the RH corner, but I am trying to get it moved to a more prominent position just above the subject header. I am also trying to negotiate that it is displayed when you view the forum at a glance as well. This will save one of us mods from having to edit the car details into the subject header all the time. Bear with us, there are more updates to the forum yet to come.
I'll reconfirm that details are in the Vauxhall Astra Owner's Manual page 34 for the 2000 model year (page number may vary for other model years)
Page 40 in the 2002 manual. Copy of which is below.

2000 Astra G LS estate oil level display.
Thanks for that, but both page 34 in the 2000 manual and page 40 in the 2002 manual refer to the 'Multi-information display, a 3- line display inclusive of 'Check condition' whereas my car has the 2-line display described on page 32(2000) as the 'Triple information display' and no reference to oil level indication.
So my original question remains, is there a oil level indicator or have Vauxhall fitted a sensor just to plug a hole in the sump?
Regards
Brian

On 2000 model year Astras, Check Control, including engine oil level and automatic transmission oil level (where fitted) was part of the Technical Pack, optional at extra cost on CDX & SRi models, not available on other models.
Your 2000 Astra-G LS estate won't have any oil level facility, apart from the dipstick. There may be an unused blanking plate bolted to the sump on your model - if there are wires coming from it, then that's a non-standard modification, but unlikely to be useable as you only have the 2-line display.

The 2005 manual does show slightly different warning lights for oil level and pressure - the oil can is underlined for level but not for pressure. But that's an Astra H , can't find anything in the 2002 manual.
