1.9 HDI 110 3rd Gear Crunch - adam0303
I have a problem with my 3rd in gear in that it crunches if i try and change into 3rd too quick i don't mean like Nigel Mansell driving either. My dad has the same problem with his 406 1.9 td in fact exactly the same all other gears change fine and clutch is ok too the car is serviced regularly and has only done 74k miles i have heard HDI's can crunch but can anyone explain it is really annoying. also another factor the clutch slipped for about 10k miles then stopped and has been fine for the last 20k miles what is going on with this damn car it has a mind of its own.

Before you change gear blip the throttle with the box in neutral and the clutch up (known as double de-clutching) and then quickly see if the car changes gear cleanly. If it does the synchro cones are worn. At that mileage it's nearly always caused by a lack of mechanical sympathy and aggressive driving style at some point in the cars life.
If the change improves as the car warms up and is fine when hot it suggests the oil needs changing to the correct grade .

common problem & as already recommended change the gearbox oil but you must use the oil recommended by peugeot otherwise you will have the same problem. What often happens is when the car gets serviced & gets topped up with g/box oil the wrong specification of oil gets put in. Its something like a MABE 80 oil but im sure someone will correct me on spec.

Interesting to read this as my '02 406 grates sometimes when changing from 3rd to 2nd. I think its time to change the gearbox oil but if anyone out there knows if the drain plug is easily accessible and also where the plug is to top it up - it would be appreciated.

I will have to look at the oil as dont know when or if it has been done it does change smoothly into 3rd "if" its not too quick the car has had issues but nothing i have had to spend money on as such. like my clutch had an intermittent slip one garage quoted me then went to another and the guy said he wouldnt do it as the clutch slip wasnt bad and didnt make sense why it was so intermittent and now for the last 20k miles it has completely stopped. my dads 1.9 td p reg 406 also has a 3rd gear crunch but he says he doesntr worry about but doesnt know why it does it

worth an oil change definatley but do buy the correct spec of oil, I cant reiterate enough how important this is. I think its just drain & refill with 2 ltrs & fill through top

I think the plug is removed with a 19mm socket under the wheelarch. Good idea changing the oil in case someone filled it with an 80w-90 instead of lighter 75w-80.

Hello from down here!

Good forum with some obvious specialist knowledge watching and controlling.
I like a well run forum! I especially think "screwloose" needs to be kept happy, his posts are apposite.

This topic mentioned "double de-clutching" --- sort of a 'blast from the past'.

The thing is, that I learned to drive heavier vehicles in the early 1950s on a crash-type gearbox, and unless the process has changed dramatically, this d-d-c only helps in down-shifting and will hinder engagement (never mind synchromesh condition) if used in the opposite shift direction.

The process is about approximating the shaft rpms which are about to engage with each other. If you are up-shifting you would baulk the synchro more if you blip the throttle in neutral.
Cheers,

Never tamper with natural ignorance.

I had a similar problem to this and cured it by replacing the lower engine mount bracket ( drivers side). Mine was completley shot through and must have changed the position of the gearbox relative to the gear lever. As usual with pugs it was a pig to change but worth it!
