I am shortly selling my car privately, without guarantee. When I write the receipt, what details should the receipt contain so that I legally cover my position without making any commitments?

"No warranty is given or implied....." would be a good place to start. Is it generally assumed that a private sale includes no guarantee so I don't think covering yourself would be a huge priority.

I have bought and sold many cars privately and never given or been offered a receipt - is this actually common practise?

there have been a number of previous threads on this. forum search on the right (under your login name) brings up

with a link to another "good-read" thread!

forum search on the right ...
also brings up this later thread:

(and shows that even some moderators find difficult to use the search! )
