K11 CV boot split causes MOT failure - mikem004
1995 K11 Micra. It has just failed it's MOT due to CV joint boot problems. I guess that this is the rubber shroud over the CV joint.
LH CV boot has a split.
RH CV boot is not atttached securely.
The CV joint/driveshaft seems to work OK.

Question: What causes these splits etc.? Potholes. Or just rubber perishing with time?

Question: How much to fix this? MOT garage quoted 200 quid. Local garage quoted 90 to a 100 quid. I was told that both driveshafts would have to be removed and a new boot fitted. Is this correct? Can't the boot be fitted externally without removing the driveshaft.

Thanks
Mike

Well, we could blame split boots on speed bumps and speed cameras. In actual fact though, it usually down to the rubber ageing and impacts from stones etc.

The driveshaft has to come off. Get the local garage to do it for £100, but ask them to use a genuine Nissan boot.

Thanks, A.
I guess CV boots are one of the things that can go on an old banger.

I've never used one of these...

...but does anyone know if they're any use? - would they save mikem004 some money?

Steer clear of these split boot kits. From previous postings on here, they'll only last a short time (chances are you'll need to replace it again before the next MOT). A forum search will reveal more details, comments, etc.

With regard to the other CV boot not being attached securely. A good quality cable tie works wonders at holding them on. In fact a lot of CV boot kits come with cable ties as the average DIY'er at home doesn't have the correct pliers to secure the metal clips on with.

Some kits now come with these type of metal clips:

A pair of long nose pliers and a screwdriver is all that's needed to secure them, and they stay put too.

The sticky boot kits last, but only if you observe the cleanliness procedures when you fit them. If you rush, or try to drive the car before the glue sets properly, they last 2 minutes. To be honest, to fit one properly and keep the glue joint clean doesn't actually save you much time over doing it properly, which is why I don't use them. The one I put on my Cavalier lasted over 30,000 miles, but took over an hour to fit thanks to the fiddly nature of stopping CV joint grease contaminating the joint, and put the car out of action for the rest of the day while the glue set. I could have fitted a conventional replacement in maybe another 30 mins, and had the car useable straight away.

Cheers

I've used split boots very successfully, yes cleanliness is vital. I've deliberately tried to separate tham after gluing, without success! Wipe the whole area clean, glue up, allow to set then put the grease in and fix tightly with cable ties. By the time you've done the second side the first's dry & vice-versa.
The advantage of this is you need no tools or specialist skills. Yes it's sometimes nearly as quick to put a proper one on - if you have the skills and tools (and a garage or it stops raining!).

I have **tried** to use the split boot kits, but they never seemed to last long. I got them glued up OK, but the seam where the glue goes is quite wide and thick (stiff) so started to split itself after a couple 1000 miles. Mind you, they might have been improved, its at least 10 years since I tried to use one.
