friday.. went to have a tooth out (surgical procedure) at the hospital , was advised to bring a driver ( to get us home) in case of fainting or such , just would like to know if any one had a similar experience , say a broken arm or worse and drove home?

I once slipped on a wet, grassy slope and, unknowingly, broke a small bone in my right foot; I suffered some pain whilst walking or driving and, after a few days, drove to the local A and E to have it checked out.

An X-ray revealed the fracture, my foot and leg were put in plaster and, after thanking the staff, said I'd be glad to get home. Asked how I was intending to get home, I obviously pointed out I had come in my car.

I was told in no uncertain terms that I couldn't and a male member of staff, who followed me to the entrance, said he would call the police if I didn't arrange for a lift or call a taxi...:-)

I eventually agreed to order a taxi and later arranged for a friend to collect my car.

Looking back, the A and E staff were quite right.

When SWMBO broke her ankle a few years ago, she was given a leaflet by the hospital which explained that it is illegal to drive with a limb in plaster.

Some years ago, I drove the 15 or so miles home after a vasectomy. The car needed petrol and by the time I reached a garage, the anaesthetic was wearing off and I walked across the forecourt like John Wayne after his horse had kicked him. I flaked out shortly after arriving home.

If the medics advise 'don't drive' - then don't drive. Anyway, I would have thought that to defy them could invalidate your insurance.

Health and Safety Policy in our group dictates that a RA is undertaken (one of the guys broke his arm in 5 aside a few years ago) a yes/no is part of the requirement, a GP will advice. Your insurance company will need to know and they will ask for the same information from your GP. I once rode a motor cycle with a very painful ingrowing toe nail on my gear changing foot. Young and foolish then though !

Had sclerotherapy treatment on one of my legs on Thursday. Was advised to either use public transport or arrange a lift to / from the hospital. Glad I did the latter because after the local anaesthetic had worn off, I had trouble getting in the passenger side of the car, let alone thinking about trying to drive one.

A few years back I broke my left wrist snowboarding (I'm right handed). Not driving wasn't an option as far as work was concerned and so I hired a Punto Selecta (the cheapest auto hire car I could find at the time). Told the insurers and they were fine.

In the film, Douglas Bader drove with artificial legs on the way home from having them fitted. He crashed the car.

I once dislocated my left shoulder playing football (popped straight back in, but it was exceedingly painful) and drove home like that. Changing gear was not much fun. of course I didn't know I'd dislocated it at that point otherwise I probably wouldn't have.

Went to the hospital later that night, mum driving me. After 8 hours there, it turned out that there was nothing they could do for me anyway, so we left only to find that my mum had a flat battery. Ever tried to push start a car with a recently dislocated shoulder? It's even less fun than trying to change gear. Especially when you have to start by pushing it uphill out of its parking spot, and your mother panics that you're about to push her into a bollard (which is actually still about 8 feet away) and slams on the brakes!

I spun my Capri whilst I had 13 stitches in my left hand (after drilling through it!).
Popped 3 stitchesand bled everywhere.

SWMBO'd wasn't allowed to drive untill the Dr gave her the ok after her Cesareans with our children.

The usual reason though for not driving after injury is that the painkillers can make you drowsy

Many moons ago had an idiot dive into me from the side of a swimming pool. His head hit into my left side - he just said " Sorry Mate" and disappeared .

I thought I was winded and just about managed to climb out of the pool and sit by the side trying to recover my breath and the pain was excruciating but I just thought it go away .

Luckily I had helicopter jr ( only about 9 at the time) with me and he helped me dress. I drove my manual company Cavalier home by putting it in second and keeping it there whilst holding my side and feeling every bump in the road.

SWMBO took one look at me , by this time in agony and drove me , again feeling every bump to hospital where an X Ray revealed three broken ribs. I was signed off for 6 weeks as a result.
