One of the first things I do when I get a new car is check under the bonnet to see whether there are any hoses/cables that can chafe on something else when the engine moves relative to the car body. Anything that looks vulnerable I put 19 mm wide PVC tape around at the point of contact. I first started doing this when I had a car in which one of the heater hoses nearly chafed right through and had to be replaced. I've treated 7 hoses/cables this way on my 03/03 2 litre Focus. I'd sooner be safe than sorry.

Very good advice. This sort of thing comes under my category of "spot the cock-up before it gets you". All cars have weaknesses and there is usually a way of addressing them to enhance reliability or servicability. (For example, it's well known that VAG B5.5 Passat front suspension pinch bolts rust into place - removing them and greasing them once a year takes about 15 mins per side).
Back to chafing of pipes, I've just spotted a beauty on my B5.5 clone (AWX diesel). The fuel hose from the filter outlet to the tandem pump fuel inlet passes under the charge air inlet pipe and rubs on it - badly. The trouble is, you have to disconnect the charge pipe and lift it up a bit to see it. Thanks, VAG.

I do this with my own cars and cars I work on. I use self-amalgamating tape. Works a treat.
