Getting one as a company car any views ? - stevied
Due to a "change in circumstances" it looks like I will soon have a Mazda6 as a company car.

Anyone got any views on them?

Thanks!

Subject line tweaked to avoid Mazda 6 appearing three times !

The MPS is nice doubt you'll be getting one of them though.

Unfortunately not! It's a TS2, I think I can have petrol or diesel. Spec looks OK, and by all accounts it drives well.

I'd be hard pressed to draw a picture of one, that's for sure.....

I think it's a sharp looking car.

I've not driven one, but it's based on the last Mondeo, so it should handle well.

That's an interesting comment, as one of my neighbours has just got a brand new one, and but I was struck by how anonymous (a contradiction, I know) it looks. Probably doesn't help that it's in a kind of drab grey colour.

There is a 'first' foto, to be released, of the NEW model, in current Autocar.

a bit more presence, in the rear view mirror, if might now have!

"it's based on the last Mondeo"

I read here that the new Mondeo is based on it.

Am I wrong?
Any views on the Mazda 6? - rtj70
Definately not related to the old Mondeo. And I said the new CD-EU platform was derived from the old MAzda6 and looks like I was wrong.

I've got a new (old) Mazda6 on order and really enjoyed driving it. Found it comfy etc. It was a 2.0d Sport and that is what I am getting. The TS2 similar but you lose the Xenons, spoiler, auto lights, auto wipers over the sport. But still get Traction Control, BOSE stereo and sun-roof.

I'd suggest you go to the local dealer for a quick test drive. I was very pleased and got a 48 hour test drive to follow-up.

Downside is emissions are a little high (165g/km of CO2) but list price good.

I have owned a Mazda 6 1.8TS for over four years. The only thing that has gone wrong was the electric headlamp levellers. Both headlamps had to be changed under warranty.

I do find the car a little noisy on the motorway at speeds in excess of 80mph and the ride choppy at low speeds in town. However, they are the only faults that I can find. I believe that the facelift given around 18 months ago greatly improved on these areas.

The car is well equipped for the price and drives very well, particularly on the country road. Fuel consumption in the high 30's on a run, very roomy and well put together.

I would definitely have another one, probably with the 2 litre engine. However, I believe that the new model due out next year will be bigger than the current model. This would put me off.

I had heard that the Mazda6 could be noisy on the motorway and had poor low speed ride. The sport diesel (so 16" wheels) didn't have these issues so assume it was sorted.

The new Mondeo and Mazda6 are that bit bigger to put me off - 120mm wider for the Mondeo over the old one with mirrors.

I have a Mazda6 2.0TS 5dr (in Silver) bought new in March 2007. This replaced a BMW 323i E46.

This is the facelifted model referred to above.

After 5000 miles I really cannot fault this car. It's comfortable, good to drive, sharp steering, well equiped - huge boot, fold flat rear seats. My first Japanese car (after 32 years of driving!) and nothing has gone wrong or feels like it's going to. Low 30's mpg in local driving, mid to high 30's on a longer run. This car looks best IMO in the lighter Silver (Silver Contrail).

Compared to the BMW some of the trim is not of the same quality & the FWD is not - of course - up to the RWD BMW - but it does handle well for FWD. A new 6cyl BMW is - however -almost twice the price of a discounted Mazda6 !!

I have also been looking at the Mazda 6, can you tell me if there is a good amount of leg room in the car?

Thanks

>>>can you tell me if there is a good amount of leg room in the car?

Yes, there's plenty. Good car; had mine nearly 5 years now and will probably buy its replacement in due course.

If anyone interested in a new discounted one before the new model arrives in mid Novemeber, then move fast. They stopped making the current one 2.5 months ago (for obvious reasons). Stock is still arriving in the UK probably as it takes time to ship from Hiroshima - 30+ days probably.

Drivethedeal has the 2.0 petrol for <£15,000 and the diesel for £15,500.

As much as I like my Mazda6 I wouldn't be looking to pay £15,000 - £15,500 for one at this late stage.

Thanks for your comments! I am presuming I will get the new one, which does look better. I quite like the current one, better in saloon form I feel... but it is a bit bland. But, sounds like they drive OK... not bothered about the ride, I have had a few Audis and they don't actually have suspension fitted to the Sport models or so it feels!

When are you expecting the Mazda6? The earliest I've heard the new one is out is mid November but my supplying dealer does not think the diesels will be out until a bit later.

I think I am having a pool car from September then a new one when they're out. I just hope "pool" doesn't mean clapped out 1992 626! : )

Found out today my car grade went up by 2 after I've ordered the new car... now with an extra £32 per month to spend would I have chosen differently? The Mazda is actually going to be £40pm less than my car allowance. Or I could have got a cash allowance of £6300 instead. Too late now though - I'll just get back the difference in my salary albeit small after tax.

Hope the new Mazda6 is good when it comes out - I'm not sure of the front (RX-8 styling) but the inside looks a lot like the RX-8 to me. I did like the current/old Mazda6 when I drove it (felt a little more fun than the Mondeo) hence getting one. Oh and I'm looking forward to a sunroof again - last car with one was my Golf GTI which also had climate ;-) Best of both.

It's also on the Mazda website:

www.mazda.co.uk/Showroom/ComingSoon/2007Mazda6/

The old centre air vents (circular) seem to be gone:

www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-mazda6/320055/

In fact a lot looks RX-8 .. not that I have one. But the outer two are still there and the new Mondeo
has Mazda6 style circular vents in the centre of the car. I've checked I think.

Now if they did a diesel RX-8 in Europe.... The pros without the cons. Then an RX-8 with a normal engine might be a pro too.

Assume you're not referring to the Mazda Mondeo pic I posted a ref to :-)

The front of the new Mazda sure is bold looking:

I purchased a 6 from new, 54 plate.

Nice looking car but thats as far as it goes. No mechanical issues as such other than heavy wear on front tyres, noisy engine, noisy on motorway. Drab drive, awful stereo, boring company car image.......paint thin hence scratches, bodywork easily dented in supermarket car parks.

Main dealers who refuse to believe these things rattle, and boy do they rattle

boring,boring,boring...

A sheep in wolfs clothing....its gone and im happy
Any views on the Mazda 6? - rtj70
Doog your response is very useful. And maybe not too late for me....

I wonder if "noisy engine, noisy on motorway" was addressed on the 2005 revision? I drove a brand new Sport diesel hatch and it was okay to me - better than the Mondeo but my Mondeo might be the issue.

Interested to know model though... "awful stereo"... I will get the Bose 6 disk changer and maybe iPod connector. Was yours a Bose, i.e. TS2/Sport? Interested as I drove the car without stereo mostly on test drive to listen to everything else, like wind noise.

As for scratches/dents in supermarket.... you should see the Mondeo! The previous Passat had no scratches going back at all! And I parked in the same places etc. so paint a factor on cars.

You've concerned me slightly as I liked the car and will have for 4 years!

Had a TS2 diesel for 3yrs, nothing broke, good motor, plenty room in back and a good load space.

Looking forward to that and hoping it won't be too much wider than my current 6.

Hello all, thanks for your replies! Been so busy training for new job as mentioned only been on here a few times!

I have now had the 6 for 5 weeks and done about 3000 miles. I really like it, it's the 134bhp TS2 with the BOSE stereo. It looks OK in a slightly bland way, but the biggest surprise to me was the handling.. it really does handle very well. I have quite a few times now come off the motorway purely to blast down some A and B roads. A veritable Q-car.

The new one should be good I would think... I have it from a reliable source that despite being larger than the current one, it is considerably lighter and also lower CO2 emissions mean it will be cheaper on the company tax. Not bad eh?

"biggest surprise to me was the handling.. it really does handle very well"

When I test drove the 2.0d Sport I thought the handling was very good. Went out for a night drive to see if the xenons were worth getting (Sport vs. TS2 basically) and ended up driving for 100 miles before getting home late - had to find some winding dark A roads!

New Mazda6 is 35kg lighter than the current one. Also 65mm longer but not sure of width changes. It was said it was based on the new Mondeo CD-EU platform but they may have extended the old one a little instead.

As for styling I prefer the current one and glad I'm not getting the new one. It's also plenty big enough for me ;-)

I get my new 2.0d Sport on Monday - looking forward now.

Well my 2.0d had it's new turbo and intercooler...

Then the engine failed catastrophically on Tuesday. Big ends and valves hit by pistons. A new engine is 5000, so the lease company are writing it off as a total loss.

125,000 miles and 4 years old. Just one data point, but I would question the long-term reliability of the diesel engine.

Never a moment#s problem with my Vento 1.9 TDI over a larger mileage and five years.

Still a great ride though,

regards,
Daren
Any views on the Mazda 6? - rtj70
Ouch. Bet you're only glad it's not your total loss! I'm still getting used to my Mazda6 and only done 600 miles since it arrived on Monday which is a lot for me these days (working from home).

Did over 400 miles yesterday (Manchester to Slough and back via detours) and no aches or pains when I got back after over 8 hours in the car. So it's comfy and a good cruiser. Think I've got about 44mpg out of it so far on that run which was proably 70% motorway at a true 79mph. Faster at times and did accelerate fast at times too.

Just need to work out how best to secure my PDA sat nav to the car now to avoid windscreen mounts. Air-vent mount used in Mondeo won't work with these vents. Looking at using the pop-up map holder but cannot get the suction mount to adhere... so might try Velcro(R) tape.

The new one uses the same diesels as well I think only lower fuel usage I think. HJ will no doubt have his review on here in a couple of weeks.

I bought one last year and only kept it for about 3 months........ heres why !

I bought a 3yr old 2.0i auto estate from a wel-known large carsupermarket, it had 60,000 miles on the clock.

It was the 4speed auto, not the newer 5speed I think has gone into the face-lift cars.

Good points - amazing ride, handled as well as my celica convertible does, fanatstic refinement, very quiet.

Interior excellent layout, seats very supportive, a nice car to do a long journey in.

Also very good legroom and boot-space.

Initially gives the impression of being a good build quality car.....

BUT !

I found that just driving down a country lane with leaves overhanging would scratch the paintwork with very fine lines down the sides.

Looking at the few scratches on the bonnet the paint is rizzla-thin.

If you looked a bit more carefully on the parts of the car les-well painted - eg. underneath of bonnet, inside engine bay and other more hidden areas, you could see hints of surface rust just beginning to form.

The interior plastics etc. on closer inspection don't feel as good quality as they look.

What else put me off was the performance.

It felt OK on a test-drive around town round theblock (all you get with this supermarket) but once out on the open road, the performance felt very flat.

The 2.0i petrol is not well-suited to the auto-box - it has no power at low revs and you have to use the kickdown almost all the time to get the car to "go". Either this or the gear-ratiso on this box are not well matched tothe negines power delivery.

If cruising on themotorway at 60mph or so and a slow incline apears, you would keep squeezing the throttle with no pick-up at all, until it hit kickdown point and would then rev to the red-line and then shift.

So in short, I didn't like the way it drove inthe real-wprld, and also I didn't think the car would last a long-time and would start to look tatty quickly - a shame as it was otherwise a nice-looking good car.

it maybe that diesel or petrol-manual would be better to drive.

I notice that used like-for-like the Mazda6 are very cheap compared with the Toyota avensis and Honda accord when you compare year/mileage/spec

I also don't know how much Ford parts are in this vehicle - which could exlain the cheapish feel,a nd possibly drop in used price.

I bought one in April this year its a diesel Ts2 hatch 06 face lift model with six speed box just over a year oid when I got it off the first owner for 12K and a bit!

Well pleased with it goes well, handles great not bad on power or derv 43 mpg on work run could get 46 on a longer run

Build quality, materials not quite up to German standards and doors don't have the clunk you get with even an Octavia. However nothings has fell off rattles or leaks yet and seats are very comfortable. It don't burn oil in fact it gaines it! bet some vag owners would appreciate that

Appears to have been designed and built by people or robots who care about what they make and to me as a private owner thats more important than doors that clunk shut or a badge

It tows may caravan like I don't even notice it's on the back!

Last but not least it gets up to temp faster than any other diesel I tried and it won't wake the neighbours if you go out early
