Morning all,
I'm coming down to London tomorrow for the Community Shield at Wembley - of course, being a shy Northern boy I'm nervous about visiting the big city.
Haven't got much choice but to bring the car down, am happy enough to leave it miles out and get a train or tube in. Will probably be coming down the M40, would appreciate any advice on where to park, what to avoid.
Cheers
Lee
(Still deliberating about the C4; most likely keeping the Mazda, will resurrect that thread when I get around to doing something with it)

Leave the M40 at J2 and catch a train at Gerrards Cross which stops at Wembley Stadium. About 15 mins journey, see nationalrail.co.uk for times.
|
Or continue on the M40 as it becomes the A40 and leave following signs to Hillingdon and then Hillingdon tube. £1 to park and cheaper tube fare to Wembley Park on the Metropolitan line.
|
Hope you've got the Chelsea flags flying from your car windows and ariel !!!!!!!
""Come on the Blues"" ;-))

I used to park near Stanmore tube station when going down from the North West - it's about four stations down the line to Wembley.
You also get away home faster after the match.

Hillingdon or Stanmore it is then. Will take the TomTom and see which works out better when we're down there.
I'm neither red or blue (black and white and a bit upset at our choice of manager - anyhow) but am sat amongst the London faithful. Man U fans, that is. {runs}
Thanks for the advice,
Lee

Hillingdon, Stanmore is more of a pig to get to.

The advantage of going to Gerrards X, or one of the BR stations further in on that line is that Wembley Stadium BR is much closer to the stadium, and you'll find there is a queue to get onto Wembley Park tube station on the way back as so many will be headed there, and it's also a longer walk from the ground.
|
Wembley Park is still very close indeed.
Certainly might be queues to get in, not sure about Wembley Stadium BR, but the station looked very low-capacity.

Hillingdon Stanmore is more of a pig to get to.
Stanmore would be M40->M25->M1, which is quite a diversion.
Advantage of either Hillingdon or Ickenham would be immediate proximity to A40/M40.
Nearly all the parking in Uxbridge is residents only, though you'd certainly be able to find free on-street parking that's not restricted within 3/4 mile of the station on a Sunday, it's easier to pay £1 or £2 for parking.

Lee, What's wrong with Steve Thompson ?
Ha'way the lads...

{Laughing}, nothing I should imagine. My gripe is with Enorum...sorry, "BIG Sam"
Ha'way the lads indeed.
Thanks for the advice - I'm going to go Hillingdon or Gerrards Cross or maybe a Ruislip. Looks to be total pot luck with whether the stations will be mental or not. Here's hoping I miss most of the traffic

i tried ruislip once and there was nothing near the station....

btw, can definitely recommend getting dim sum/chinese at Alisan, next to the stadium, opposite the fountains.

Glad I checked tfl ....
"METROPOLITAN LINE: On Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 August, suspended between Moor Park and Amersham/Chesham, due to planned engineering works. There will also be no Chiltern Railways service between Marylebone and Amersham on both days. Replacement buses operate."
That'll be Hillingdon then.
Thanks for the food tip, not sure I want to pay £73 for a burger inside....

You should have checked the CHiltern Railways website instead, there's actually an expanded service to Wembley Stadium (as you'd expect)

Most people won't know it's there, still with 80,000 spectators, and a 100 or so covers, it still might be tricky getting a table.
There's an Indian just opened next to it, can't comment on it though.

Good advice. Or if you have any problems at Hillingdon, continue along the road for about 3/4 of a mile and turn right just past the parade of shops on the right with the car dealership. About 300yds along here is Ickenham tube station which is one station along on the Metropolitan Line from Hillingdon.
£2 to park, but there's always space and it's usually manned too. I park here all day every day and have never had a problem.
From either Hillingdon or Ickenham to Wembley Park is about a 20 minute run, and you don't need to change trains. Just make sure you get on a Metropolitan Line train not a Piccadilly Line one (they share the same track here).
There are stickers in the windows to tell you which line, and anything going to Baker Street or Aldgate will do you just fine.
Cheers

Scrub that! just read the message before.
Still good advice when there's NOT engineering works.

Big thanks to all those who tipped me off to Hillingdon. Can't believe how easy it was, £1 on a Sunday to park and thirty yards to the platform from the car. Super quick getaway and we were back to Preston in just under three hours.
Only mistake was trying to avoid the HUGE queue on Wembley Way towards Wembley Park station by sneaking round the back of Lidl/Currys. Of course, we couldn't get to the station that way until the main crowd dispersed so ended up in Wimpy (thought they'd gone years back) until the crowds subsided.
Good day out, made much easier by your advice.
Thanks again
