Demand for DeLorean cars is so high that it may go back into production, according to a US firm.

Its a non story. There is a company in the states (that repairs / refurbs / rebuilds them now ) that can make one from scratch. Apart from the body it used fairly basic mechanicals.
Still an iconic looking shape tho. Its everything a sports car should look like. If it had handled or gone half as good as it looked, and was built anywhere near like a decent car it would have sold shed loads more.

Yet another example of yr superb automotive taste TVM?
Looked like the overweight dog it was.

Lud,
I keep telling you, someone who thinks an escort is good looking (and not even a mk1 at that) is not qualified to dispute my taste in automotive shapes.
I dont dispute it was a dog, just that it is an iconic shape that has not lost any of its appeal over the years, and those gull wing doors are a work of art, requiring only 10 inches of side space to open.
My any measure its an interesting looking car.

They were very heavy, and apparently took a long time and cost a lot to develop, but the facelifted crook wanted them, so there it was.
Who told you I thought any Escort (even the mark 1) was good looking? It wasn't me. Perfectly harmless looking though. And actually a bit less misproportioned than the ghastly Delorean, because unpretentious.
It is often difficult to reach agreement on these aesthetic matters. I know what's pretty all right, and don't give a toss whether people agree with me or not. I wouldn't be surprised if you felt much the same. :o}

Lud I realised some time ago that you were a hopeless case, utterly beyond redemption. I try, from time to time, to drag you kicking and screaming out of the 19th century, to open your eyes to all that has visual merit, but alas I fear, with only partial success.

Never mind TVM. Partial success is better than nothing.
Do you like the palace of Versailles?
19th century indeed! Johnny-come-lately stuff.

Do you like the palace of Versailles?
It wasnt bad, but with that flat 4 engine it was a bit of a slouch. The convertable was a real looker.

It didn't handle, it wasn't well built and it was/is a shed!
|
Seconded on all counts. When I finally got to try one I couldn't believe how bad it was.
At least we - you and I - won't be paying for this one...

They've got themselves around 200 of the original Renault bent sixes and have decided to build cars around them. The cynic in me says it's because they'd never convince anyone to put one in anything else, so if they rebuild the original spec shell instead of selling them on it goes from being a thirsty unreliable lump to being collectable..
|
How are they managing for gearboxes thou? ISTR Lotus stopped making the Esprit (a true beauty) because Renault no longer made/stocked the R25 gearbox they used.
|
id rather have a new mark I or II escort?
i always wanted the rs2000 doyle had
ha ha
there is a delorean in cov transport museum they look rubbish close up
|
you've all missed out the fortune they cost the British tax-payer!!!!
|
|
|
Just one question. Why????????????
JH
|
Second attempt at saying I didn't forget the British taxpayer - see above.
Original post was deleted for some reason. Believe me, mods, you can't libel the dead...
|
Why?
It handled like a boat because of the large cast-iron engine overhanging the rear wheels.
The only reasons it's an icon are that it was built in stainless steel, it cost the British tax-payer a fortune and it featured in a series of popular films. As a car it had little merit and should be left in museums and newsreels.
|
reasons it's an icon are that it was built in stainless steel
It was built in rather heavy, thick glassfibre-reinfoced resin. The brushed stainless panels were stuck on for ornament and had no structural role at all. They did of course make the car even heavier, and their finish was virtually impossible to maintain, as well as very easily marked.
The thing was a total phoney. Anyone who wanted a car with a Renault V6 in the tail would have been far better off buying, er, a Renault GTA (I think) which at least went properly (although that too needed aerodynamic fettling to make it safe at speed).
|
But a Renault GTA doesn't have a flux capacitor ;)
|
If it had someone here would be moaning it doesn't work.
Mind you I find the GTA more attractive.....
|
Thing is with a GTA it's just another fast looking car, whereas if you pull up in a deLorean everyone will know what it is.

Well done, BH.
You've spotted the problem.

A few years back now i saw a delorean in barmouth on a cold wet windy day - ever there it still looked stylish.
|
I found the Delorean stylish in a "British Leyland" sort of way.

|
You mean that placed next to an allegro or a marina even a yellow skip would look stylish!
|
|
Total rubbish Blue Haddock.
The Renault GTA was a fast car (although flawed).
The Delorean was a totally phoney lump of Americanoid carp, and looked it. Sorry.
