Honda Accord 1999 - location of OBD diag - sasquartch1
Does anyone know if a 1999 Honda Accord 1.8i Executive has a OBD diagnostic socket ? I've looked under the dash, behind the ashtray etc but can't see anything. Has the car even got one ? I was under the impression that all post-96 cars had them possibly that is not true.

Also does anyone know how to reset the airbag warning light on this vehicle ?

Any help welcome !

sas

It should have one on that year; directly below the steering column. Forget all the OBD-II rubbish that's spouted by idiots [that's US only - they had to have them from 96-on.... We didn't until EOBD came in.]

The airbag may have two completely separate reading and erasing plugs. One between the glovebox and the centre console; the other in the dash fusebox, or on a flylead.

Why is the light on? You can't "re-set" the light without fixing the fault.

OK - I'll have a look for the plug.

Should this be accessible without removing any panels ?

Thanks for the advice about OBD-II - most of what I googled before finding this site seemed to be US based.

I think you will find that the 1.8 Accord does not have an Obd socket .(the 2.o does,as it has a different engine management system).Have a look under the dash ,pass side for a 4-pin plastic plug, usually blue.Models fitted with Obd socket have it located on side of centre console ,pass side ,behind carpet trim.hth

It's on the passenger side tranmission tunnel, before the plastic trim starts for the gearleaver etc(kinda under the dash). There will be a bit of carpet that is cut to accomodate plugging in.

I've checked the centre console behind the flap in the carpet and there is no socket although there is hole in the metalwork where a socket could be fitted.

Therefore, that makes it likely that the socket is not present on 1.8 models.

So my question is - how is it possible to read any fault codes ?

My main problem is I want to diagnose why the SRS light is on, despite being reset it comes straight back on.

Any ideas ? It's an old car and don't want to spend loasds of dosh at Honda to fix a fault I can live with.

thanks so far for the replies.

Have you checked if it's not there because some numpty has broken the connector and it's pushed behind the metal frame?

I've had a good look and am 99% certain there's no socket there. It does have a in-car phone kit fitted in that area but cant see any reason why the plug would have been moved.

Does anyone know for certain whether the 1.8 model has a socket or not ?

There are no certainties when it comes to DLCs. The airbag isn't on there anyway. Read the above post!

Mines a 1.8, but 2001 and definately DOES have one.

On my 98 Prelude you reset the SRS by shorting the 2 pin SCS Service connector under the drivers side dash. It's not completely straightforward but I shall try and locate the process and post.

1st..turn off the ignition and remove the MES connector(green thing with 2 wires in the underdash fuse box)and connect your paperclip between the two wires(insert one side deep and the otherside loosely)

2nd..Turn ignition on, SRS light will come on for about 6 seconds then shut off

3rd..disconnect the paperclip within 4 seconds of the light shutting off. SRS light will come back on.

4th..reconnect the paperclip within 4 seconds of the light coming on, SRS light will go off.

5th..disconnect your paperclip within 4 seconds, SRS light will indicate memory has been reset by blinking 2 times.

6th..Turn vehicle off and wait 10 seconds. Start vehicle, SRS light should come on and then go off as normal.

If it doesn't work the first time, keep trying. Timing is the key here.

I've done this - the light blinks as it should so I'm pretty sure the procedure has worked - but there must be a real fault as the light still comes on.

Is there any way (without Honda or other specialist equipment) I can determine what the fault is - if I knew where to look at least I've have a clue. Unfortunately my experience with electronic systems and garages is that fault finding seems to be an expensive (for the customer) trial and error experience.

Would be nice to fix the fault as overall the Accord has been a great car, over 110,000 miles and still relatively trouble free, other than routine tyres, brakes etc hasn't needed much doing to it at all.

And now here we are 3+ years later...!!

Just thought I'd add for the benefit of anyone searching on how to reset a UK Honda Accord 6th Generation ('98 - '03) airbag light, the procedure for the Prelude mentioned above definitely does work in the same way on the Accord.

The connector is a yellow 2-pin block plugged in to the back of the fuse board. To access it, open the coin holder drawer below and to the right of the steering column, remove the single 8mm nut and then gently pull the dash lower cover away - it is held by push fittings after the removal of the nut. Once this is off, access is easy, the connector is in the middle of the board.

Obviously, the warning light is there for a reason, and if the light reappears after the reset there's still a problem to be investigated a.s.a.p. For me, I had forgotten to reconnect the airbag before powering up during some repair investigation, triggering the light, so the reset was all that was needed.

Hope this helps someone, if only to save a garage bill.

Derek
