New Merc C-class - scott1s
Seen more than one or two on the road now the lemmings have started buying in their droves. All I can observe is that Hyundai Sonata owners must be well pleased their cars have been copied by Merc. Marketing opportunity for bonnet badges, AMG Hyundai body kits etc . . . . . . .
What do you guys think?

I know there is divided feeling. I have just come back from the South of France. I saw quite a lot of new C Classes there. Personally the sport ( known as Avantgarde in a lot of countries)it looks the best. The more aggressive sporty grill suits the new shape better. I saw a very shiny black sorty one and that looked pretty good. I am always interested to hear what everyone thinks.
I actually think that new Hyundais are looking better and better. In their groups scott1s I certainly have respect.


Changed some spelling for it make more sense, a BR pointed it out. - PU

No I agree with the OP - there is something rather coarse about the new Merc C Class styling. It does look more like a copy of a Merc rather than an original. But then I think that of quite a bit of new Mercs eg the ML/GL which just don't look sleek or smart and certainly don't look any better on the road than things that cost alot less.

I much prefer the look of the newest 5-series rather than the 3-series. The front and side look great,but from the rear the new 3- series is not quite right.I saw a lot of new 5-series in the South of France and across in to Italy.I admit the new one looks great, but it is a more expensive level of car.
I have always thought that the design of the new Renault Scenic and Grand Scenic is wonderful. Very refreshing.I never grow tired of it. That famous French designer is a genius.They could improve the roadholding; but then you lose the wonderful ride comfort.
As I mentioned before, I am very interested in what people say about the new C Class. I think the Sport ( avantgarde) looks good in black or silver, but the ride of the Elegance is better.
The E Class has a lovely ride; but that is a far more upmarket car like the 5 series.

I really love the looks of the more sporty Mercedes. I have just come back from the South of France.I have never seen so many Mercedes sportscars. Lots of them in Monaco.

Not sure about that, the Merc will still lose more in £ terms, even if not in %.

I'm afraid that if I could genuinely afford to drive around in a nice Merc I wouldn't be bothered by the £ difference over 3 years (which probably isn't massive if you buy the right model), and I certainly wouldn't be driving around in a Hyundai.

seen them at the mb garage.
the sports looks the by a long shot. the ones woth the three star stuvk on the bonnet look ceap.
when i got my first mb and and think like this, the star makes me think 'o've made it' - lol.

the new sports version is the one i will buy in about 2 years but not the ordinary one.

paul2007. As I said earlier. The sportier one looks much better. The sporty front suits that design of car much better. When I saw a brand new very shiny black one driving when I was recently in the South of France, it really looked well.
I know Mercedes have gone to a lot of trouble and expense with this car. It is under the surface where they have spent most of the money.I certainly highly respect it and I drove an Elegance 200 for a good thorough test drive. Unfortunately the sportier one will have slightly harder suspension even when set for the comfortable ride. Someone also said that the front wheels on the sport one are a slightly different size to the back wheels ( only on the sportier one).It's a lovely car though.

Unfortunately I have to hold off getting a new car for a while.
If one gets a C Class Elegance 220 CDI in the Irish Republic it costs you about 58,000 euros with auto gearbox after tax.Funilly enough if one is spending that money, an E Class is dearer; but with better ride and comfort generally and much mre room for rear passengers, it's not quite such bad value as you might think. Of course it's a very expensive car; but thinking in the BMW 5-series bracket, the E Class is a blooming nice car.

scottIs. The sporty looking one has better looks. It is such a pity they sacrifice some of the normal lovely Mercedes ride.
Thanks for starting this thread. It is much appreciated, as indeed I am very interested in reading all the different views.

If one looks up www.cartoday.com and clicks on "driving impresions", there is quite a balanced review of the new C class. He drives the Avantgarde, which is basically the sport in the UK I think. This South African website has always been interesting.
