The A420 is today (wednesday) still closed inside the ringroad (A34), this doesnt affect you, A420 to the A34 interchange, then A34 north to the A44 junction (few miles) from there easy to Kidlington (Frieze Way to Sainsburies then north into Kidlington).
Whoever suggested going south and around the eastern bypass needs to buy a road atlas!
StarGazer (currenly using buses as our mainline trains are shutdown for at least two weeks)

Tune your radio to 95.2 for BBC Radio Oxford when you leave the Swindon area. A34 is very bad this am past Botley/A420 interchange and up to the A44 (Peartree) interchange, so do allow plenty of time.

Why not travel up the night before and stay at
www.travelodge.co.uk/find_a_hotel/hotel/hotel_id/6...e
which is about a 25 min walk/10 min bus ride/etc from Kidlington.

I commute from Slough to Newbury everyday and we had flooding issues around M4 J13 (Chieveley/Newbury/Oxford) junction but there's no such problem now. So I think you'll be safe taking A34 from M4 J13, I know few colleagues here who travel on A34 and they haven't said anything about A34 being flooded or such. I hope it helps.

Judging by the current BBC News 24 coverage, Oxford sadly appears set to suffer further flooding from tomorrow.

Are the trains running? If they are that would be my suggestion - two hours from Taunton to Oxford and you arrive having spent that time preparing not stressing
The cabbies at the station will know the way round any local problems

There's no rail service into Oxford from the S as the line is awash at Kennington, just S of Oxford, on the route to Didcot and the GWR. There are buses on that section, so allow an extra 30 mins. However, that only gets you to central Oxford, and Kidlington is another 15 mins by taxi from there.

Thanks for the advice - I'll set off nice and early and take my time. I've done the journey before so I know roughly where to go, and the sat nav will help out if there's a road block. Sadly public transport's out of the question, I swore I'd never use a train again after I got charged £50 for a 30 mile journey one day when I needed to get somewhere in an emergency.
Besides, I need to get to New Malden after Oxford and from there to Gatwick airport for a medical at 8.30am. I'm just a glutton for punishment on our roads at the moment. ;-)

"Contact them"
Good advice. You should at least check it's going ahead. If I had a call like that from a candidate I'd tick the boxes marked "forward thinking" and "initiative".

Sounds like you are going to Oxford Air Training! Best of luck - ATPLs are very pricey these days...

Thanks local yokel, spot on... yep, the ballpark figure is about £80,000. I wouldn't want to change my mind half way through! I actually did nearly all the assessment last week, but it was for the Thomas Cook cadet scheme which I wasn't ultimately successful in getting a place on. However, I scored highly enough for them to offer me a conditional place based on a sim assessment.
Peterb, excellent advice, I'll ring them this afternoon and make sure everything's OK.

Best of luck David.
Is it Airport Medical Services at Gatwick you are going to? They are the company we use, three miles up the road.

there to Gatwick airport for a medical at 8.30am>>
You must have to be in Oxford very, very early....?

Nah, I have to be at Gatwick on Friday morning... I'm spending the evening with friends in New Malden. Helicopter, it's not AMS since it's an initial medical which has to be done at the CAA's Medical Department, but I should imagine they're nearby since both claim Gatwick as a base.
