Nsar is off on his jollies. Any recommendations for a cheapo car-hire deal at Pisa Airport?
|
SIXT seem reasonable. But I guess there are cheaper ones.
Once tried AVIS but the woman at the desk (PISA airport) kept pointing at a box on the form and speaking quietly behind a glass window, despite asking her to speak up, I just initialed the stuff she pointed to.
2 weeks later got the final credit card bill, which was for £50 more as I had apparently initialed the extra insurance boxes.
Oh and don't get fobbed off with a car with no side bump strips, otherwise you'll be charged for dents as Italians believe in parking with about 6 inches gap and whamming doors into th e aadjacent car.

Try booking it through the Ryanair website - even if you're not flying with Ryanair.
I tried this recently for a trip to Verona (Brescia) and it was well organised. Ryanair?s car-hire service is run via Hertz but I saved £50 over ten days just by using the Ryanair website instead of booking it through the Hertz website.

I can second the Ryanair recommendation. I used Hertz through their site in May with no probs at all.

also www.travelsupermarket.com. They just found me a 3 day hire in Malaga for 38 euros!

Medium Family car for a week, guessed your age at 55 (sorry) £155.

Right AS, in the car park now! You've gone too far this time
(thanks for the link though)

i mostly use a site called www.carrentals.co.uk - it compares all companies i think and always gives the cheapest and you can say what type of car you want.
It should do the trick

I am picking up a rental car from Pisa airport this Sunday for my hols. I arranged it directly through Avis as they have a deal via my work's account which gives you cheap (but disappointingly not corporate!) rates. Does anyone know where you pick up the cars at this airport? From the info I have read on the airport's website it might be some distance away from the terminal as you have to catch a shuttle bus. Plus I have booked a sat nav unit with the rental - do they put the menus/spoken instructions into English for you if asked nicely?! DB

In my experience Avis corporate rates are no different than what is available to Joe Public. Unless perhaps you go for no insurance (not even the basic) because your Co fleet insurance covers you. Not many do this AFAIK.

Hire cars not far but far enough to not want to drag your luggage there.
|
My car was Hertz. But once you have the paperwork the cars are a couple hundred yards away typically. Depending on luggage you might not want to carry/move it. I also now know where the cars are but the poster asking the question does not. The hire company desk said where to catch the shuttle/mini-bus which took only minutes including waiting.
|
Its fairly common, in fact very common, at most airports for the actual cars to be some way away, sometimes even off airport. Where its a bit of a hike the shuttle bus is provided.

Car hire is in a large lot about 500mts from the terminal. There is a bus service takes you there and back. Cracking part of the world. Enjoy - AN alfa Spider to do the Chiantigiana run from Firenze to Siena would be just the ticket!!
|
We love Tuscany - will buy somewhere when we can probably.
My advise on returning cars... you usually have to bring them back full and get penalised if not. The local petrol stations close for part of the afternoon and the one with card operated pumps for when closed does not take UK cards at all including credit cards. But you can feed in cash into the control unit. Been there and got the badge... and the card slot will take the card but not give it back. Used tweezers in the end!
Then got back to drop the car off... open a door to double check all taken out and hit myself cutting my head open! Getting stressed at the time after the petrol/diesel pump incident.

Thanks chaps for all the info - shuttle bus it will be then. Scott1s option re the Alfa does sound a good one, though unfortunately will have family (wife + 3 children) with me so its a Galaxy-sized vehicle for me, ho hum! Might add my thoughts to the 'Driving in Italy' thread when we get back. DB

Just add my thoughts on this now I am back. I found that the shuttle bus service didn't work at all well when you have luggage + pushchair + wife and 3 children in tow! Fortunately FiL met us at the airport with his car, who drove me over to the rental place leaving said 'baggage' with MiL at the terminal building. Doing what everyone else seems to do in Italy (see my other post about driving in Italy) we parked with no bother in the taxi rank and loaded all into the rented Galaxy. Repeated the operation upon return. With little luggage and on your own, I would be tempted to do what others seem to be doing and walk over to the car rental offices and not bother with the infrequent, crowded bus. DB
