Quick q from father in law. Aged 72, full NCB, SAGA want 550 quid premium on a Picasso 1.6 (newish). Seems steep to me, but does anyone have any clue how sensible it is?
Cheers
Joc

Do a few online quotes and you will get a better idea but looks pretty steep to me.

At or close to the age where insurers won't take you on - but will renew.
If you find a good one, stick with them.

I'm just about to renew the comprehensive insurance on my VW Bora (was going up to £181 with DirectLine); quote from Zurich is £146. I could have got it a little cheaper, but prefer to stick to insurance company names I know..:-)

The Bora is a 1.6 16V SE and I'm five years younger than your FIL.

Well it's about 40% more than I'm paying for SDP (inc business and commuting) with a similar car (2.0 Hdi Xantia) parked off road in a midlands village. I'm 47.

OTOH if he's an aging rock star living and parking on road in Central London and driving to his gigs then that's a bargain!!!

Thanks all. He's not with me at the mom and I didn't want to guess a whole load of detail online for a quote. That said, just put basic details in Elephant and got 330 quid.
Thks for speedy replies.

That's the same as SAGA are charging my 86yo father for his C5 2.2 auto Exclusive estate with three named drivers, so yes either my father got a great deal or yours is being charged over the odds.

I've never had a Saga quote yet that wasn't astonishingly way over what I was quoted elsewhere.

Try keying in the details (when you have them) into:

confused.com and comparethemarket.com

You'll get plenty of quotes from both.

Just recently Norwich Union quoted me a ridiculously high premium for a 1.6 HDi Pic as a replacement car on an existing policy. Despite 20 years of continuous business. Way out of line of other insurers and despite not very disimilar insurance grouping (7 vs 5).

A friend also just moved his business for his Citroen Synergie from NU on renewal because of a crazy increase.

It appears NU has become very anti Cit/MPV. Anybody else with similar experience???

Confused.com;I'm confused-they won't even quote me for the companies I'm already insured with.

NU have been discounting car insurance heavily for at least the last 12 months to gain market share (my sister works for them) - it's payback time.

As for confused.com - agree with jc2.

confused.com came up with about 20 quotes for me earlier this week...:-)

It depends on which companies and brokers each comparison website is in league with - DirectLine, for instance, which I'm with at present, will never be quoted on such websites as it operates as its name suggests.

PS

I use the comparison websites to get an idea of what is available and then visit the home websites of the company or companies I'm interested in for a direct quote; interestingly, the comparison websites' equivalent are often slightly cheaper even though they gain commission from any successful referral.

I had this chat with my mothers (who's 73) insurer. Apparently insurance companies view 35-60 year olds as the safest drivers. One outside that range is starts costing more. Older people are seen at more risk of failure in faculties and hence more likely to have an accident.

By the way I agree with the comments about Saga - they are not normally the cheapest insurer around for older people.

I'm 67 and my comprehensive insurance price has remained pretty static - or even dropped - during this decade.

I think alot of people mis-understand SAGA and think it is a nice gentle older person's charity/affinity group marketing organisation. In fact it is profit making, indeed highly profitable and extremely well run. In the insurance business it certainly used to be known for its exceptionally strong negotiating tactics and ability to get a "heads they win, tails they win" deal out of insurers. It is not for nothing that it was bought and sold as a business recently for billions.

"I'm 67"

I don't believe you, no 67 year old could possibly know as much as you do about LCD/plasma tellies and home entertainment systems.

I think you're a 22 year old working in Richer Sounds.

Well, on the day war broke out, judging by the date of my birth the follow year, I was being conceived...:-)
