Hi all - recently bought a mk4 2002 1.4 E golf . The car is great albeit that it has little in the way of extras and i really want to fit central locking. The VW dealers said it would cost a massive amount to fit and so i've been looking around but all the systems i have seen on the net look to be a bit cheap? Can anyone help me in finding the closest system to a standard one, which won't pull my pants down in cost, and is good quality? or indeed any other suggestions, advice,etc...
all the best
Si

I used the motors out of a maplin kit to repair the central locking in a Discovery. The full kit of motors is only about £22 and comes with a control unit, 4 motors, wiring loom, bits of metal and rods to connect to the locking mechanism. code YD77J absolute bargain.

hi
you all ready have central locking you all you need is a unit to trigger that.

what do you mean? are you sure?

yes m8 did one on his 2 wires to the divers door lock (one for lock one for unlock to trigger your central locking) then all the unit needed was a feed and an earth. option was to wire it to the indecators so they flash. unit was £45.

Hi
I assume your car has central locking - you can lock all doors by turning the key in one door. What you need is a remote locking kit. These tap into the existing car wiring and trigger locking/unlocking using a fob on the keyring.
A firm called Spal make good reliable and well made kits see: spal.webprofessional.it/default.php?t=site&pgid=45
The instructions with these kits don't tell you how to fit it to a VW Golf, they explain several typical central locking circuits and you have to determine which type you have and then where to connect the wires.

I've just read elsewhere that the E models don't even have central locking. If this is the case, you'll need a kit with actuators for every door. To me, this would make the job a non-starter. You'd be better selling the car and buying a model with CL/remote if this is really important to you.
If I HAD to fit CL/R to such a car, I'd be inclined to get the original parts from a scrap yard but you'd need to get the matching key fobs and then have the keys cut to match your car and have the ECU module programmed to match the key fobs - all too difficult/expensive really.
