hi all
i have got a small oil leak overnight the size of a fifty pence on my drive coming from the rear diff on my jeep can anyone tell me the easiest and cheapest way to fix it can it be done by myself or is it a garage job
|
Depends where its leaking from. If back cover then easy. If pinion oil seal then a garage job, and not cheap..
|
hi thanks looks like its the back cover is it a case of removing it and putting on a new gasket or can i use instant gasket what grease do i use
|
I'm assuming this is the infamous 'Dana 35C' unit...
There is a gasket. Undo the ring of bolts, take off the cover, clean everything up and refit and refill. Don't use grease, use the correct diff oil. Keep an eye on the oil level and don't run it low, these things are fragile at the best of times.

thanks for that aprilia will have go tomorrow weather permitting will let you know how i get on have also found some info on the internet with pitures if anyone interested

Hi
It?s most likely just axle RTV and no gasket. If it has limited slip diff you will also need diff additive to go in with the correct oil. If you don?t use the additive it will skip judder around corners and knock your tyres out. There is also two grades of oil to use depends on if you do towing or not. Post you vin / chassis number and I will give you the grades I can also check if you have any recalls out standing.

The chap who I go to for aircon work runs one of these and since I replaced the gasket I know that there is definitely one on his model. I think his was a '99, maybe the later ones just have RTV?
You are right about the limited-slip additive - needed that, and got the oil from the dealer, I think it only needs a litre or so.

LUBRICANT SPECIFICATIONS
The 8 1/4
Multi-purpose, hypoid gear lubricant should be used for rear axles with a standard differential. The lubricant should have a MIL-L-2105C and API GL 5 quality specifications.
Trac-Lok differentials require the addition of 5 oz. of friction modifier to the axle lubricant after service. The 8 1/4 axle lubricant capacity is 2.27 L (4.8 pts.) total, including the friction modifier, if necessary.
The DANA 35
A multi-purpose, hypoid gear lubricant which conforms to the following specifications should be used. Mopar® Hypoid Gear Lubricant conforms to all of these specifications.
· The lubricant should have MIL - L - 2105C and API GL 5 quality specifications.
· Lubricant is a thermally stable SAE 80W - 90 gear lubricant.
· Lubricant for axles intended for heavy-duty or trailer tow use is SAE 75W - 140 SYNTHETIC gear lubricant.
Trac-lok differentials require the addition of 4 oz. of friction modifier to the axle lubricant. The Dana 35 axle lubricant capacity is 1.66L (3.50 pts.) total, including the friction modifier if necessary.
CAUTION: If axle is submerged in water, lubricant must be replaced immediately to avoid possible premature axle failure.
Hope this helps you and you have no outstanding recalls any more info you need let me know.

Hi
to add to this going by the sales codes your axle is a DANA 35 not the 8 1/4
|
how will i know i i have the trac lock diff
|
I think a '96 Cherokee will just use silicone sealant. I had a '95 and don't recall a gasket.
