95 1.6 petrol Head Gasket & Timing Belt - Suspect Steve
I have just had these changed on my Golf 1.6 95M Petrol.
When I got the car back from the garage I noticed
the engine was making a slight whining/whirring noise.
What would this be?
Should I take it back to the garage??

Re: Head Gasket & Timing Belt - Dave Lacey aka Dr Dave
Take it back ASAP, I bet they've got the timing belt on wrong....
Re: Head Gasket & Timing Belt - Dave Lacey aka Dr Dave
Yeah good point Andrew; a mate had a '91 Golf GTi 8V and that thing whined like a pig - that turned out to be the cambelt tensioner wheel.

Not a plastic POS thing like those GM things but all-metal in construction

New tensioner fitted and all was well for evermore :-)
Re: Head Gasket & Timing Belt - Andrew Barnes
Sounds like the cambelt tensioner could be whining - get it checked asap!

Cheers

If Dave and Andrew are correct, perhaps you should take the precautionary measure of telephoning the dealer and letting them know of your concerns. Ask them whether they would like you to drive the car to them at their risk or if they would like to collect it?
Re: Head Gasket & Timing Belt - Suspect Steve
Thanks everyone!

I have to drive 25 miles to get home,
I shall comtemplate what to do.

I should tell you that the work wasn't done at
a VAG dealer, but a local VW specialist.
Re: Head Gasket & Timing Belt - Andrew Barnes

Just be polite with them, explain you are concerned about the whining noise and they will probably be happy to help.

Cheers

Andrew

"I should tell you that the work wasn't done at

They still wont want cars they've worked on dieing! Tell em and they'll sort it out!
Re: Head Gasket & Timing Belt - David W
SS,

Everyone is right. Most likely they didn't fit a new tensioner and the new belt at the correct tension is stressing it compared with the old belt that will have been quite slack.

If the tensioiner is new or OK then likely they have fitted the belt much too tight or even misfitted something so it rubs.

As they all say, phone the garage and ask them what they want you to do...drive back at their risk or wait for them to collect it.

Re: Head Gasket & Timing Belt - Dave Lacey aka Dr Dave
Yeah, the difference between belts with round or square profile teeth!

That's not the only person to make that mistake, I'll bet!

SS - do let us know how you get on?
Re: Head Gasket & Timing Belt - Dave
And next time you need it done get one of the "tune up" boys to do it.
Re: Head Gasket & Timing Belt - Ian Cook
General advice is to take it back and get it looked at,pronto. Yes it could be the tensioner, but it could also be the belt.

A friend of mine had a near disaster with a belt he'd had fitted to an MG Maestro. The garage fitted a belt of the right length and width, but the wrong tooth profile. It made a whining noise. The belt was removed almost 1000 miles after the original replacement, and it was almost in shreds. New belt = quiet engine.
